Last year I totaled my Twin Tail SPAD. It was about 4 years old and had originally been my Pusher Puller. After the two .28 Magnum engines wore out I converted it to a single engine with an OS 46 AX engine, keeping the original twin booms and tail feathers. This version is a better match for a single engine configuration with all new fuselage, tail booms, and tail feathers. Symmetrical 48" wing with 13" cord including 2"ailerons; rear of engine to LE=6-3/8"; TE to end of booms =16-11/16"; booms on 16" centers; CG = 3-1/2 inch but will soon move back a little; AUW = 5LBS; extreme duty 5/32 dia torsion bar main gear with simplified mounting; 6 servos with four inside wing; receiver and battery also inside wing. Currently will not snap roll so I may reduce the vertical stab areas to do some experimenting. Spar has three hard points made from 1/4" aircraft plywood and 1/4-20NC blind nuts to support the front of the 1" X 1/16"square aluminum fuselage and the front of the two 1/16" X 3/4" X 3/4" aluminum boom angles. The ailerons are from the booms out. Between the booms are two 4MM dia carbon rods inserted into two flutes of the rigid portion of the aileron section to provide stiffness.

It'll never work!!!

Pretty cool looking.

Have you thought of making the center section a flap?

Very cool plane. I will go ahead and send you a PM so with my home address so you can send it to me for flight testing. I know it is a generous offer but I am just that kind of guy.

Hi Clean.
Yes that would be a nice spot for a flap. I hate to add anything that is not needed. One of our members had a large Stuka that he landed with flaps and forgot to reset them. Took off with them down and totaled the plane. I just know that would happen to me.

Hi Clean. I like that statement. I know my limitations but I keep forgetting them. Two days ago I was flying my Twin Boom in very gusty winds. I wanted to test a change I had made in the CG. After a couple of turns around the field I decided I better land NOW because of the wind. I came down much further away than I normally do and when a down draft hit the plane I did not react fast enough and the plane hit hard. Judging from the dirt on the bottom of the plane (our field is well grass covered) the trike gear bottomed out. Broke the prop and steering rod. No other damage. A balsa plane could have been totaled. My intend is to always touch down in front of me but occasionally I forget. I sure makes life fun though. I'm taking it back up in a few hours.

I know what you mean.

I ALWAYS touch down in front of myself, unless I don't.

Hi vorona.russia
Your design for a SPAD V-tail is an excellent idea. Do the two tail wheels allow enough steering to bring the plane back to you? I enjoy steering my twin tail plane around. The elevon servos look small. Are they miniture? If yes, how much torque are they rated for? What material do you use for the engine mount? Does the elevon give you enough function to do a vertical stall turn (I thing it is called an Immeleman).

Well

This is radio-mix V-tail with both elevator and rudder functions. Ailerons - with flapperon functions/ I use Futaba 351 Gyros on ailerons in Mercury-1 and -2 planes. All 4 wheels are fixed.

and if you view videosc of Mercury-2 you can see as rudder work in air? and gyro on ailerons hold the plane strongly
