DonStegall -> Club 40 Racing at Lowe's Motor Speedway (2/4/2008 7:00:06 PM)

I have been working with the club that flies at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (LMS) to see if there is interest in pylon racing within the club. At the Club meeting on 2/2/08, pylon racing was discussed and voted on. They chose to go with RCPRO Club 40 Advanced for club racing. Races will be held on the first Saturday of each month from April through September. These will be 2 pole races and they will start at 12:00.

There is a conflict with the 3 pole racing in Greenville, SC on 4/5/08, but the President of the club, Evan Doughty, thinks that the first race will be a good practice opportunity for the club members. I’m not sure which event I will be attending yet. It depends on where I’m needed most.

There is going to be a fly-in at LMS on 4/12/08. I’m setting up a registration page for the fly-in. You can access the web page at http://www.lowesrc.com http://www.lmsrc.com or just http://lowesrc.com and http://lmsrc.com … We will be putting on a pylon racing demonstration at the fly-in. Club 40 will definitely be part of the demo, but we may do Quickie 25 as well. Possibly even 424 or something faster. Faster planes are definitely welcome at the fly-in even if they are not part of the 2 pole demo.

Humpy Wheeler was at the club meeting and plans to attend the fly-in. He has a new show debuting on SPEEDTV (www.speedtv.com) on 2/12/08 called “The Humpy Show”. See http://www.speedtv.com/programs/545/ for more info and air times. Humpy just started flying R/C in the last 6 months. He is doing very well and has already been flying Club 40 planes in the past couple of weeks.

A lot of people aren’t aware that tours are available at the speedway. You can come race R/C and visit the speedway. Or go to a driving school and get some really fast laps under your belt.

If you think you will be attending these races, please speak up. I think this is all very exciting. Please let the FAPA guys know they will be supported. And let Humpy know you will be watching his show. ;)

This sounds like great news for the RC community and pylon racing. Local pylon racing has really come a long way in a short time. Last year there were only three local pylon races (T-6) and this year the season is starting out with two on the same weekend! My Sky Raider II is race ready a long with my; 424 plane, T-6, and two 1/2a racers. Seems like I've only been working on pylon planes this winter.

I am really looking forward to this year's flying season. I'll see you at the races - Seth

The April 12 Fly-In and the June 7 Race at Lowe's Motor Speedway offer you an opportunity to experience high speed thrills at the Speedway.

The Richard Petty Driving Experience will have Ride-Along's available on those dates.

rcpilot32 -> RE: Club 40 Racing at Lowe's Motor Speedway (2/5/2008 11:41:18 PM)

I am definately planning on being at the April 12th fly-in. I'm also planning on bringing my 428 plane, 424 plane, club 40 plane, and my diamond dust. Maybe even a few more of my toys.

A new location for races needs a lot of support. Just as the Firetower Flyers and Honea Path (GRAMS) clubs need everyones support. There has not been any places to race in SC and NC in many years. Now we have the potential to race at many different clubs.

Talk to your fellow club members. I plan on making up a flyer to hand out to the hobby shops in the Greenville area. It will tell about Club 40 racing and what is needed to get involved on a local basis. When new comers find out how easy and how much fun it is, they will also spred the word.

Let's keep the ball rolling.

This is fantastic! Club 40 racing is popping up every where!
Wish I was a little closer so I could attend. Make sure we all get a good write up after the race.

heliothiszea -> RE: Club 40 Racing at Lowe's Motor Speedway (2/6/2008 1:17:17 AM)

Don - Any chance the winner of the pylon race will get a ride in the Richard Petty Driving School . . . just kidding ;) - Seth

rcpilot32 -> RE: Club 40 Racing at Lowe's Motor Speedway (2/6/2008 1:29:54 AM)

Just kidding nothing. I want a 180mph ride around Lowes Motor speedway. About 10 years ago, I traded a giant scale Cap 231 for 100 laps of driving a legends car at Concord speedway. Not many miles away from Lowes speedway. What a blast it was. The legends cars might be small but it was a great thrill for me. A chance to drive or ride on the big track would be awsome.

I used to fly full scale. About 30 years ago, while flying a twin engine Aztec, I buzzed a runway at 210mph. About 25 feet high. That was the fastest I have ever been with me in control. My passenger wasn't as thrilled as I was. To be on the ground doing 180 would be an ultimate thrill. Richard Petty Driving Experience would be something to remember for a lifetime.

In my storage room, I have a flying Porsch. Built it the year Richard Petty retired. Sent him photos of it. Without asking, he autographed one of them and sent it back to me. It is covered in the red, white, and blue #43 petty colors. I may just get the urge to get it flying again.
James

Don,
You know I am planning on making as many of these races as possible this year. I have tow C-40 planes ready, 424, T-6, 1/2a, and Q.25 and a secret weapon Q.25 that I am working on.

Is there a chance of a demo day before that?

I'm looking forward to meeting Evan too.
It's going to be a great year for racing around here.

Edit in response to James...
James I used to drive Legends and Dwarf cars along with some late model and SCCA events before model airplanes came into my life. I went around the road course at LMS in a supercharged MR2 doing a buck sixty five into turn three....[8|]back in the day bro.
Don't start me on drag and road race bikes. My kid found my driver bag and a bunch of pictures a while back. His mom wasn't too happy about that.

DonStegall -> RE: Club 40 Racing at Lowe's Motor Speedway (2/6/2008 12:15:55 PM)

Vic,

I had the pylons up both Saturday and Sunday. The club members are cool with them being up even while the sport flying is going on. The club even reimbursed me for the pylons at the club meeting on Saturday.

Part of my success in getting Club 40 as the formula of choice is that I have let numerous people fly my Club 40 demo planes. When they find out how good they fly, they really love them. Some of the guys have tried out the pylon course. On Saturday Evan and Terry had a good race. "It was a hoot" was overheard afterwards.

Any time you want to come down and the weather is decent, we can probably put up the pylons. That's the nice thing about the 2 pole course. It can peacefully co-exist with normal operations at most fields.

I still love the 3 pole course. Right now I have 4 dates scheduled for my field, but I will probably add 2 or 3 more. If someone wants to race in NC/SC, they no longer have an excuse. ;)

The proximity to the speedway is cool. We get to hear cars running in the background while we are flying R/C. No noise issues at the speedway, so bring your screamers and revel in screaming or rumbling engines. I'm going to take the muffler off of the YS 63 FZ in my Dago Red.

Getting some sponsorship prizes from The Petty Experience or the other driving schools is not something I had thought of. It is definitely something to look into.

We had people from Catawba Valley this weekend. One guy had a 50% plane with a 3W275 in it. And he had a 19' trailer full of giant scale planes.

If you're a NASCAR fan and you don't come to visit LMS, you are missing a great opportunity. They have tours, the driving schools are there. This is your chance to get up close to the speedway. Humpy is a great guy and a lot of work has already been done to make the R/C site better. Some trees that were behind the pylon course area are now gone.

I now have the LowesRC.com web site online. I will be fleshing it out over the next couple of weeks. And I will get registration pages online for the upcoming events.

DonStegall -> RE: Club 40 Racing at Lowe's Motor Speedway (2/12/2008 12:55:00 PM)

I'm really looking forward to this season of Club 40 racing at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The club members are into it and are getting planes ready. Plus a lot of people are visiting the site.

Humpy Wheeler, the President of Lowe's Motor Speedway (LMS), is the guy that made it possible. Humpy really likes flying R/C and he is excited by the limited R/C pylon racing that he has seen so far. With only six months of flying under his belt, he's ready to fly Club 40 planes. Don't know if he'll race this year, but it is cool seeing a new pilot enjoying Club 40 planes.

The Humpy Show debuts on SPEEDTV tonight at 9pm EST. It will also be on at 9:30pm Pacific time on Thursday night for you west coast people. See HumpyWheeler.com for the listings and future shows.

The topic of this week's show is NASCAR rivalries. Kurt Busch and Buddy Baker are the guests. They will be discussing some of the little skirmishes that have occurred. The show was taped before this past weekend's event, so we won't get to hear about that. But it should be interesting to hear from Kurt.

We may see some one or more R/C segments on future shows.

Thanks Don for sharing info on the Humby Show . . . . I'll have to tune in - Seth

Radio-Controlled Airplane Event Set For April 12 at Lowe's Motor Speedway

This is the press release for the April 12, 2008 fly-in in Charlotte/Concord, NC

James, Vic, Seth, Tommy ... I hope you can make the fly-in and we can put on a good show. I will have enough of the area club members racing by then if you can't make it, but I hope you can come.

heliothiszea -> RE: Club 40 Racing at Lowe's Motor Speedway (2/19/2008 2:34:06 AM)

Hey Don - I'm planing to make it April 12 . . . should be a great time. I think I've met a few of the Charlotte Club Members at some other fly-ins.

I watched the last half of the Humby Show. I enjoyed it. Forgot to set the VCR so I could catch the whole thing.

See you guys soon - Seth

It's on my calendar[8D]

rcpilot32 -> RE: Club 40 Racing at Lowe's Motor Speedway (2/19/2008 11:20:16 PM)

I wouldn't miss it. I will be wiping the dust off my Bird Of Prey 428 Nelson powered quickie plane. Also bringing a few of my other toys.

James
