I love my cub, and now thanks to falcon6667 i have my pretty cub on a nice set of floats, a little to windy to put her up today so i will wait (19mph when i just checked it while i was out there setting her in the water for pics!). according to the forecast it may be that i can fly her on thursday or flyday...i mean friday.. tgif (thank goodness it's flyday) just something i said once and liked it so it stuck! back on task, i know the cub was a little difficult to fly on grass, well, just different than any plane i have flown, not hard to fly.. i have never flown anything off of water before, so this will be something totally new for me, anyone that flies a cub off of water, please give me some pointers/tips that i may need to keep in mind compared to flying the cub off of land. anyway, here is the plane in all her glory:

Never met a Cub I didn't like . Be sure to keep her nose into the wind on landings and take offs and do not pull her off the water too soon. Also, keep her speed up on landings, don't go too slow or she will drop quickly. Have fun and keep your feet dry. <*)))>{

finally got to fly her with the floats! it has been windy as i have ever seen it around here for the past several weeks, plus rain and hail and thunderstorms.. just rough weather, but today was a beautiful day!

i flew her off of a local lake, with a super place to float fly. got up the first time and take off was fairly smooth, but i got some altitude and it started undulating all over the sky, i got it back into normal flight, but it was very sensitive to ANY control input, so my first thought was tail heavy.. i got it leveled out and added in some down elevator which seemed to help steady her, then flew almost the entire tank out. brought it in and it landed beautiful.. the second flight ~10min later after i checked the cg and it checked out.. take off, fairly smooth flew up about 25' off the surface and it started the pendulum procedure, the floats were wagging the plane around and the wing wouldn't hold it in the air so i pointed the nose to the water so i would have control as it was about to stall, had a semi rough landing with no damage, but i don't think i like the way it flies with the floats, it's like the tail is wagging the dog.. the gentleman that was with me out there has been flying rc for more than 3 decades, he and i both surmised that the clipped wing cub combined with the floats being a little large for the plane (floats are 41.5" and the plane is a little over 50" from spinner to rear tip of elevator) caused the wing loading to go up quite a bit more than expected, but also that the shorter wing had less resistance to rotation than the full wing would, and that the full wing would fly those floats much better! if anyone has or knows someone that has the great planes piper cub .40-.61 size and crashed it but the wings are ok and would like to sell them, please pm me.. that is if the wingset is the full wing.. thanks!

otherwise, if someone has flown the clipped wing with floats and knows some way to correct the pendulum effect please advise, thanks! otherwise i am looking for a used full wing to put on this plane. that way i could just pick the wing i want to use, clipped wing with wheels and full wing with floats!

It sounds like it needs a "sub"rudder. Glad you got to try it. An have it back.

Most full scale Cubs on floats and many of the more scale Cub models on floats require a ventral fin to restore the yaw stability they lose from adding the floats. That is most likely your problem.

Check this instruction manual. http://manuals.hobbico.com/gpm/gpmq1882-manual.pdf

Also, since your floats are oversize, your ventral fin needs to be oversized as well.

i dont know what is going on but i got it back on the tires last night and flew it today, man was it flying crazy! i can't imagine what has happened!? it is doing the pendulum maneuver with the tires on! not so drastic but it is just all over the place! it acts like a severe case of p-factor, i did not change anything with the motor mount from the last time i flew it off of land to now so i don't understand what has happened.. when i go full throttle the plane basically turns to the left. it doesn't tip a wing, rather, it just flat turns to the left on take off and in the air. i tried it several times, i would bring it across my front, straight down the runway at about 1/4 throttle, it would fly straight, then i would go full throttle and it turned, flat, to the left and also nose'd to the ground! sounds like classic p-factor to me, but i haven't changed anything since i last flew it off land and i don't remember it being like this, well very little p-factor, not nearly this drastic for sure. this could be the whole problem, in which case i will put the floats back on once remedied, but it also seems a little like a cg issue as well, it is jerky and fairly unstable, and just as i stated before, nothing at all has been changed by me since i last flew it off land, unless the rough landing it experienced on the water changed something... i can't imagine what has happened otherwise. any suggestions, anyone had this type of issue before?

To have a plane go from good to ****ty. Something has been bent stripped, come loose. ya need to start checking stuff..range check your radio..also tap all wires. pull on stuff till you find something. also my goldburg cub flew fine with clipped wing on floats.Keep looking.

i really want her on the floats, i think i may try adding one thin washer to each of the left two engine mount bolts and see what happens.. what washer thickness should i try?

>>>>>>>>NO<<<<<<<<<<< Think about it you did nothing to change anything. So that tells me something in the plane has changed. putting air in a tire that keeps going soft dosent fix the problem "Grasshopper". look an think about what has changed since it flew good.

Yes take a close look. Something has changed. And if the Cg is good with the floats it would not be squirrely in the air unless they were really outsized, soooo something has changed !!

I added in some right thrust as well as add some weight to the nose. turns out the problem was my cg was aft, a lot! i was measuring the cg on the spar, but apparently the cg was supposed to be measured from about 1" in front of the spar, so i added some weight to the nose, and put the floats back on.. not only did i add weight to the nose, i also widened the stance of the floats by a few inches, as well as moved the floats forward about 1 inch. now the step is about 1" behind the cg and i have a lot more float in front than i did originally. what do you guys think about the way the setup looks now? the first two are the way the plane is now, while the second two were the original float setup that did not work well, mostly due to the plane's cg being too far aft.

It looks better "Grasshopper". Go for it. You might find the step is still to far back. If it lifts off strangely you'll know.
