ExtremeNitro -> What Video camera to buy? (2/5/2008 12:56:16 AM)

I need some direction on what Video camera to buy [:o] I want to use it to record video footage of my 40 to 55 mph RC cars/trucks.

What soft ware should I use? I am currently messing around with Windows Movie Maker, will this work?

I would like to also take on board footage without strapping the camera to the truck or car.

Price range $400 to $600.

Thanks for your time!

I'm looking to buy the Canon Powershot G9. I like it because it can be a HD video or 12mp photo camera.

If you google it you see it going for as little as $350.

I just bought a new Mac computer. When you eventually buy a new computer, get a Mac, if your doing lots of photo video work. imovie and iphoto are great, and it comes w/ the computer!

I'm not sure what you mean by not wanting to strap on the camera.

Velcro and/or rubber bands work well for me.:)

Good Luck!

How do you think of this Canon HG10 40GB High Definition Camcorder? I just received it for $626 about a week ago and I have played with it a little bit. It takes very good pictures in low light if the subject is within the reach of the flash and if the camcorder is able to focus well. The hard drive makes it very easy to get out and shoot, I am happy with the product so far.

danfarina44 -> RE: What Video camera to buy? (2/22/2008 12:14:01 PM)

That's a nice camera. I wish I had it.

Keep in mind that it's a lot of data for a computer to handle. If you plan on doing any editing , you'll need tons of memory and ram etc.

Extreme, I'm curious to see if Movie Maker works for you, let me know.

imovie is set up w/ an HD format, but I'm still going to want a separate hard drive to do any serious editing. At least 500G.

Just for fun, here's my last You Tube video: not high def though :(

Have fun w/ your camera skysky

I'm also very interested in this subject as all I have is an old VHS camcorder. Took(takes) pretty respectable video as long as I can keep up with the subject, but I can't find batteries for it and it's a pig. Not to mention no way to get the vids on my pc. Can the powershot G9 Take good close-ups? I mean down to a few inches. The stilll cameras I've been looking at lately seem to have trouble with this(or it's operator error!!) when I'm messing around with them in the store. Already took back a Kodak that I just wasn't happy with, and I'd rather avoid that issue again. I like to take pictures of my fish and other pets as well as my planes/cars/boats so the occasional very close shot is important to me. I did manage to get a couple good shots out of that Kodak camera while I had it.
This is a shot of a "life flight" helicopter that landed in front of me on my way home one day and one as it left.

Fast panning with some HD cameras can produce a studdering effect(similar to low FPS in a game) so you need to capture footage with this in mind. Check out review sites with user feedback - can't beat user input.

I got my HD camera right before my wedding and honeymoon to discover when we got home that some footage had this studdering effect. Had I known this beforehand I woulda captured my footage a little differently to get a better finished product.

I paid 549.00 from Best priced cameras. That was the cheapest listing at that time. 3 days ago
Now this other site has it for even less. Ok?

That's another NY Scam Camera Shop, http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Sonic_Cameras

Darkbird -> RE: What Video camera to buy? (3/25/2008 2:25:51 PM)

Camcorder looks great, just out of my price range. At least at a reputable dealer. Might have been able to swing the $459, but even those scam sites are showing well over $600 for the price right now. Also seems to vary a lot from day to day. Read those reviews and there's no way I'd chance anything at either site. Looks like they are stripping everything out of the package and then cancelling the order if you don't buy a bunch of thier other stuff, which I can neither afford nor would know how to use(reffering to the extra lenses and such). Probably need to look at a lower end camera instead.

danfarina44 -> RE: What Video camera to buy? (3/25/2008 3:57:36 PM)

I afraid you might be right. I still don't see the charge showing up on my credit card.

They must price it below cost in the hopes that s/one will order accessories.

"if it sounds too good..."

I have an order # , I'll send them an email ( from my "Spare" email account) just to see what happens.

Darkbird -> RE: What Video camera to buy? (3/25/2008 6:48:24 PM)

Most of those reviews spoke of getting an e-mail requesting confirmation of the order which turned out to be an excuse to try to sell you more stuff. If you refuse, you get an e-mail stating your order has been cancelled due to the item being out of stock. Let us know how yours goes.

WOW that guy has balls you would have to haul off in a dump truck... landed that chopper right in-between four sets of power lines. Haven’t seen that done in a while. MUST HAVE BEEN EX-MILITARY HOOYAA!

danfarina44 -> RE: What Video camera to buy? (3/26/2008 4:21:39 AM)

I'm going to call American Express' fraud unit.

After talking w/ a friend at work, it convinced me. (pissed me off)

He's seen this before, they call it "short selling" Selling products they don't have, trying to scam people is what it boils down to.

They tell you they've got itin stock, then it's on back order for 4 to 6 weeks.

That gives them time to contact a wholesaler to buy returns and refurbished products by the hundreds, re-seal them, and sell them as new!

When I called to check on my order the guy told me that I bought the European version. Is that the "PAL"?

Anyway, I asked how much MORE, he said $ 350.00! When I said I wanted to cancel, he said "fine", and just hung up!

Unreal, So.... I'll do my best to stick it up their A%$ for a change.

I tried several other sites w/ similar deals BUT WHAT I THINK IS THAT THEIR ALL THE SAME COMPANY.

Here's the ones I tried that I (think) are scammers!

Sonic Cameras.com
Best Price Cameras.com
RazzPhoto.com

ANYBODY EVER BOUGHT A CAMERA FROM ONE OF THESE SITES AND ACTUALLY GOT A DEAL?

LET ME KNOW

Thanks,
Dan

Yeah, I felt bad for the person getting hauled off, but it was quite a sight. That shot is a little deceptive though, he actually landed just this side of the lines. Still not something you see every day. Here's a couple more of the shots, these are as he came in. every once in a while it's good to be a truck driver.

Back on topic, I'm really glad someone pointed out the problems with those sites before I tried to buy from them. I think maybe I'll just get a decent still camera and see if I can find someone in my club who has a good video camera. I think what I want will just plain be out of my price range.
