Funny how you can hear different things from different people. My LHS guy says the Silver Series is a great esc. I had one go bad on me in a DF as well (SS35 in a Diablo), however I think that was may have been my fault for running a 4s LiPo that probably overpowered it. I have read either on this forum or another that some guys like using the E-Flight 60 amp esc in the FJ. I may just upgrade to that one in the very near future.

Well lots of factors add up to different success stories with anything. I prefer Castle Creations esc's over anything out there. No comparison IMO to any other company making esc's. They back them very well too!

That's way to cool GREAT idea

northchim
correct on the servo exts. only a couple of bucks
Your set up is almost the exact one in mine. I have run tower hobbies ESC for years and never had a problem ...until I used a 4 cell-DON"T and 2-over amped it showing off--there I said it.
I would suggest you start with a APC 5.5x4.5 -- make sure you balance any prop you put on the plane. The max prop would be 6x5.5 APC as you will be close to exceeding ESC amp limit
watch the FJ in action see the link in the above post

I now use the new eflite 620 amp ESC in the FJ and it's a great price. Castle is THE best but it may be out of you price range as it is for me.

You MUST have a prop bal. you can purchase on line or a good LHS will have 1-2 diiff. ones in stock
I use 1 that uses mags. to supend the prop on a shaft. I can't remember the name brand off the top of my head. I can do a picture step by step on here if needed

Yes they are a bit pricier than some but worth every penny. If budget is in mind then it is not the choice. Eflite makes a pretty good line of esc's as well. Nothing beats being able to hook up to the pc and make changes as you want. That feature alone sold me. I also run quite a few Eflite esc's in different planes from the 22a-60A and they are all solid with exception of the 25A which I have smoked 3 of. They are the ones that come stock in strykers and typhoon 2's now and I am sure a few others. Not sure if they figured out the problem with them but I am not the only one I know that has had repeated issues with them. Other than that no other issues with Eflite.

Just my .02

Ok
Here's a fun thing to do
find that perfect place to fly and see what your city town home and even street looks like from the air
http://maps.live.com
No downloading as with google earth and you may have a bird's eye view ( see the selection bars and the top I suggest the HYBRID view) Make sure you wave when you go flying as you never know who is watching

Well I was going to post pics. but now I have to repair the nose-again. Flying on Monday in tight space and just missed clearing a curb-landing over a parking lot and was aiming to curb hop into the grass-I missed
Took off and compressed about 2-3" of the nose. I think I'll replace with a pink foam nose and knowing me - I'll make 2 !!
I also removed the wing tip "tanks" by doing that plane developed a wiggle - fixed by changing the tip from a neg. camber to a positive one and sanding the tips round-that removed 95% of the wiggle.
Will make 2 noses today.

Can I join the party?

Maiden flight of my FunJet last weekend. Hyperion ESC is causing problem but I got couple of high speed passes. Will video on next outing.

Setup is Flightpower 5S3700 EVO25, HET 2W23 motor, Hyperion 80A OPTO ESC, 4.7x4.7 APCe.

Have not done eMeter testing yet but 50A is quoted for this combo. More soon.

ditchit: Can you double check for me. Which one does the right wing connect to? Which one does the left wing connect to? I can probably figure out how to program the rest with the DX7 manual. Delta set up you say. Gary

Sorry - just got back from work but I agree with Tianci.

Just eMetered my setup. Proves that I shouldn't max throttle excessively and explains why it was so damn quick when the ESC was behaving.

Flightpower EVO25 5S3700 lipo
4.7 x 4.7 APCe prop
Hyperion 80A OPTO ESC v3.1W
HET 2W23

16.54 Volts
79 Amps
1308 Watts
39000 RPM

Spec for motor from HighEndRC.COM...

For pylon /EDF jets up to 1600 grams
Suitable for HET EDF unit 6904 or WeMoTec 480 mini fan
-Diameter : 28 mm
-Length : 57 mm
-Shaft Dia. : 3.17 mm
-Weight : 100 grams
-No load current(lo) : 2.4
-Internal resistance: 0.015
-KV : 2850
-Max Current: 54 A
-Max efficiency: 87%
-Power Nominal: 850 Watts on 5 cells
-Recommended Props: APC E 4.7 X 4.7 )

Note: Don't run 2W-23 for over 30 seconds at full throttle. On 5s the RPM is close to 45000 in our 6904 fan unit. It is better to use throttle management. After flight cool the motor for 20-30 seconds at low RPM

I think the numbers for the HET 2W23 were stupid after discussing with a mate who is a lot more in the know that I am. Something would pop very quickly. I substituted for a Mega 16/15/3 and got these numbers,

17.59 Volts
73.2 Amps
1288 Watts
? RPM (too dark, will retest tomorrow)

Still too hot considering it's rated for 30A continuous. I'll have to prop down for this motor. Will pick up some smaller APCe props tomorrow and experiment tomorrow evening. Great that it's so easy to swap motors in and out of this model. Either the HET 2W25 or the Mega 16/7/6 will be the next purchase for this project. I was hoping I could get away with what I've got but looks like I need a new motor.

I want to get this FJ as fast as possible but I think, in comparison to the Projeti thread (which he got to 165mph on a 16/15/3), it's a bit more difficult because of the mount obscuring the prop from airflow. Not a lot of the prop is seen from the front of the model. Got to be bad for performance.

This is going to be a bit of a journey but I want to get to 130mph if possible on 5S.

Took my FJ on her maiden today. It was also the maiden for my new DX7 also. New radio and a new plane and I have only been flying for 4 months with trainers. What a recipe for a disaster right? Yes and no. I did crash hard a couple of times and broke the nose off both times. One of those times was because my elevons were reversed and I didn't know it. The other was just plain stupidity. However I had more good flights than bad and even made a coouple of pristine landings Overall, a successful afternoon. The plane is well beyond my ability at this point so I have pleny of room to grow with this bird. Thanks for all your help guys with my reciever
