I am using A123 receiver packs in several airplanes. I was going to set up dual receiver packs for two larger airplanes but am concerned about the potential for single cell failure due to internal short in one cell. Is there any potential for this type of failure? With dual 5 cell Nimh and NiCad my tests show no problems with one shorted cell, but I can see the potential for trouble with such a great voltage differential between 2 packs.

Hello Gharm,

I have been playing with the smaller 18650 A123 cells and have had a couple of them die by going open circuit...

I don't believe this is a normal failure mode, but it is something to consider.

Any that were not charged to over 4.2 volts?

Hello Charles,

No.

I have been regularly charging them to 4.2 volts without problems. I ran into an application that had a built in charger. Unknown to me, it charged to 4.6 volts. The cells took one cycle of this, then went open during the second cycle.

I have had four of the VPX packs go open,no one can tell me why. Were not overcharged or overheated. On one pack I spliced onto the wires on the pack just to prevent any heat getting to the cells. It also failed open. I cut a cell apart in the lathe they are losing contact between two metal wafers in the top of the cell they are not dead.I have four new packs hanging on the wall,I thought they would make perfect Ign packs.I did put one Diode in the plus line to drop voltage a little. What am I doing wrong?

how did you assemble them?
what application you using them in?
what charger you using?

'open" basically means a break in the circuit (a wire or the battery cell)
as opposed to a "short" which means the battery cell positive and negative are contacting each other or the wires from the positive and negatige are contacting / touching each other

If the failed battery reads zero voltage and will not take a charge, then seperate the cells, I usually find one is good and one is bad.
the good one will read voltage greater than zero, the bad one will read zero and be "open" because the 2 cell battery read zero volts when together

If the failed battery reads 2-3 volts, seperate the cells, one will probably be good, and you can conclude the other is shorted because the pair (or whole battery read greater than zero

something like that.........

Im getting crazy about this and I can find any solotions with them one of the packs is a brand new pack the one from sin city jets the other one is from lst October almost brand new since I star to use them a month ago.

Thanks for you help on this
