These were a brand new set of Mugen clutch shoes in my Savage with a stock S-25 motor. I had just put on a new racing clutch bell and first run this happened. Any idea why? Was it just debris getting in the cut out part on the front of the clutch bell or have I done something wrong? I used the regular brass collet behind the flywheel, should I have used something else?

next time u buld it make sure it spins nice and free and has just a bit of play from back 2 front.

There is a nut the springs lock into ..do you have that in place? behind the bearing ...in front of the flywheel.
Your shoes couldnt have been sitting at the right distance for that to happen.

Yeah I had the nut in place and the clutch springs on properly. As you mentioned madmouse, the clutch bell spun normally and had a bit of front to back play as much as normal I reckon. I was thinking it might have been a shimming problem. Is the standard brass collet okay for the newer racing clutch bells?

all it does it take up play from the front to back so as long as it would spin and move then u had that right.
did u change the size of the bell?????

Those shoes are melted. something was rubbing and overheating. what kind of shoes are they? what thickness prings and did you add any weights to them?

I never had any problem with my vented CB melting shoes.

start checking the brakes and diff's and wheels.
looks like somethings binding the cb/drivetrain.
the engine had no problem turning those shoes and heating up.

They were Mugen shoes with 1mm mugen springs, no weights added. Wheres a good place to start looking? The diffs? You mentioned brakes would I be looking for them to be slightly on and causing this ?
Since this Ive gone back to the original black plastic looking clutch shoes that came with it theres no sign of overheating on them. Would you expect the plastic (carbon?) shoes to melt more or less easily than the alu ones?

i'm thinking the mounting screws for the brake pads are overtightened pinching the disk(s).

if the aluminum shoes went that quick the carbon one's will burn up alot quicker.

Kind of irrelevant, but those shoes to me look like nova shoes and not mugens.

Anyways, never seen that much carnage in a clutch before. Make sure your brake pads arent to tight. That combined with a high idle heats the clutch shoes up good.

Ok That nut can be installed in 2 directions...1 way is correct..the other way will cause your shoes to be to far out ,and then grind on your clutch bell.
That nut is smaller on 1 end vs the other...or at least the 1 I have is....just a few milimeters, but enough.
Take a picture of your engine ,with that nut installed the way it was.
As I see in your 1st pic...it seems the 1 shoe closest to the camera is out to far from the flywheel.

Did you run the stock plastic shoes with that same CB? What I'd assume happened is the inside of the bell was coated in the carbon plastic stuff, and the new shoes couldn't grip as a result.

Could be totally off-base though, just making an assumption

Sorry Just checked my spare parts box and they are Nova shoes, the mugens are still in the packet. Well spotted. The clutch bell was brand new when I put these shoes on so I know there wasnt any debris in there.
Time to do some wrenchign and double check everything. Since this happened Ive put about half a gallon on the plastic shoes and I think theyre ok, will check though
