Hey, everbody, I'm beginning the build of a large experimental UAV I plan on flying far out of my city in the months ahead using long distance satallite technology. Because I am more of a beginner in the rc plane world I'll need a little bit advice, especially from those experts! Such as, tips on building, what products you recommend, and some crash stories so I'm prepared for the worst. In a few weeks there will be pictures up on this post so you people can see how contruction is coming on the project. This aircraft will be entirely homemade. That includes all the wood sheets you would normally call, "die cut" or "laser cut"! In a couple days I'll have a little more information on this 'homemade' UAV.

hey, if u want some tips, only fly it when there is lenty of sun, and dont use a cheap cam to take the video, get a high res cam. also, make sure u build on a perfectly flat surface, otherwise u'll get warps in the fuselage and wings. also make sure to use high grade epoxy on the main structural spars, not CA. Make sure u use a design with a fairly large wingspan, like a slope soarer, (100-150inch). make sure that the fuselage can accomadate the camera and satellite gear.

good building, and dont crash.

There is a guy that has been doing his UVA test flying at our field. He is not a RC pilot so one of our club members has been doing the manual flying for him. The UAV designer is doing the UAV project for his doctorate and designed all of the control system excluding the Futaba servos and receiver. The project has been plagued with a lot of control system problems and he is only at the point that he is trying to get it to fly at a fixed altitude and a straight line after it was flown to altitude manually. I’m impressed with how much control logic is required just to maintain altitude and fly a straight line. It isn’t an easy task and this guy is pretty bright. He needs to get the basic stuff working before adding the GPS positioning control, mapping, etc.
