Our Iowa Wingspan-17.
That's a Saito 1.25 FS and a Graupner 14 X 7 three-blade.
Leading edge has been shaped, nacelles 3 and 4 planked.
4 of the bolts in the firewall hold the firewall to the nacelle. The other 4 hold the cowl(s) to the firewall. Frank requested 4 more cowls so he can scale it out double-cowled, like the real thing
His plan is to get it all skinned and on its feet, then set it aside till next winter and start on his B-29.
I'll store it in my shop this summer: hang it up where everybody can see...... and pretend it's my work.

Speaking of cowls X 8 and (Saito 125's + props and tanks) X 4, machine guns and action figures (they're NOT dolls!) this does get to be a pricey project, doesn't it, Tim? When I do my own building, I'm so slow, at least the big items come on separate CC bills, so I can delude myself about where the total is, but Frank's pace is meteoric because he's done it before and knows what he wants and how to do it.
Our plan is for a long hiatus after March (have to fly our other planes as much as possible during our 60 days of summer), then a maiden in Spring '09. I will be totally impressed if you finish it this year.
I admire your cohabitation with cats and dogs. Not all Scale builders and cats can get along that well. My cat and I have a gentleman's agreement: He promises not to randomly destroy stuff and I promise not to leave anything out he can't resist....like dangling fuel lines or flopping goldenrod linkages. Oh, yeah, AND I pulled all his teeth. But that was 'cause they were rotten and killin' him.

You know, I've been doing a lot of research on B-17's and deciding what paint scheme to use......I thought I knew a lot about WW II, but I was kind of under-informed how incredibly ( maniacally really) courageous this guys were and how much we owe them. Arguably more love of country and willingness to risk death than Kamikaze pilots. Some one-day missions would come back minus 60+ planes and 600 hundred men.
What we're building here is not so much a model as a MEMORIAL. Makes me a little reluctant to put "action figures" in them.

mike sells some nice figures but im debating no crew full detal as crew gets in the way of the detail. if a could find some nice scale figures, id like to see mikes before i buy them pilots look old. greg hans look great. I just found sperry top turret details and that will take a while to do up. what we need are ammo belts. someone should offer brass turned shells. wouldnt be hard to do. I cant find gregs screen name on here!
Yes, "decent builder" would be an apt description of me.
I'm not in Frank's category, though. He has vowed to carry out his philosophy of "each one better than the last" on this build, and if you could see the last two or three Fortresses he's built, it would intimidate the heck out of you, too.
I admit to having considered exactly what you suggested: fiberglass the air frame or something, but this is his baby and I'm sure he will do it better. I DO believe in giving an artist free reign.
Besides, I have about 3 other projects desperately needing attention to fly this summer, so it's not like I'm hurting for diversion.
I think Hahn's call sign on RCU is "a walk in the park," or something like that. I'm pulling it out of long-term memory.

looks like a sis T. i found jablonskis book that has the pilots manual in the back with all pics. i have a perfect instrument panel ill show ya. fuzzy cause bad cam the grey boxes are scale ammo feeds. i am scratching the entire turret. ill spray the rear sections interior green and use fitted styrene floor sheets for the upper sections . Im a scratch building nut so this will be fun. the waist positions are big enough to get all the detail in but it will require work. I need to access all my servos in the rear for rudd and elev and may have to lie a hatch or two. Wait! i can make the rear piece removable and have access

here are more pics. i have the radio compartment cut out i took the top keel out as it wasnt scale. dont worry monocoque construction is very strong and i am glassing the bird with 75 oz glass. the fiber glass top will have scale stingers in that area made of carbon fiber so when i glue the top on she will be plenty strong. Gota plan for cutting waist positions and think it will be easier before i completly sheet the top.
