i have the complete kit coming. i have to build a new workbench since its 98 in long and i couldnt get it upstairs. wifey will let me build it up stairs. i want to use door cores as they are flat and a 2x4 frame. any ideas or plans anyone willing to share? she will be electric with 4 eflite power 1.20 motors or 5120 axis. all the turrets move and the frames and cross sections on the wing are 100% scale. the retracts complete with glennis wheels run 1400. sounds like a lot but ive seen greg hahns and mike kramer knows what hes doing

Doors will only be around 81" unless you have a couple 8's. Another option is 3/4" MDF over a straight frame. Very flat.

camdyson -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/6/2008 12:55:41 PM)

and heavy![;)] I've a 2.5m MDF bench built this way - excellent, but don't plan on carrying it about under one arm too often.......

ram3500-RCU -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/6/2008 1:49:06 PM)

True, but I like how straight and flat a work surface it makes. When I did solid surface fabrication, it was MDF we made the tables out of.

timothy thompson -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/6/2008 1:50:13 PM)

i need to put casters on it so i can move it around. I didnt realize how big this thing is! I cand imagine building the 1/6 scale. wow! 2x4 frame ply top with levelers so i can check for flatness. cores are too small. ill be able to buy a small hose for the cost of this when done but it will be worth it

ram3500-RCU -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/6/2008 1:58:15 PM)

Looking forward to pictures. I love the B-17. I just watched the old black and white movie 'AIR Force' again last night. And I watched '12 o'clock High' over the week end. Wish they would bring back the old series.

ell for 100.00 the kids at woodshop in our school will buld it. have to bring the plans in so they can measure them

Excuse my ignorance, what is "MDF"? I need a large flat surface for my next project too.

Thanks.

They did, it's on American Life TV on Tuesday nites.

mdf is a multi density fiberboard its straight and true. at 98 inches long the living room is the only place i have ill be able to move the bench due to the casters. a 2x4 frame will be used. all i do is pay for materials labor is free as the kids to it as a project!

You might want to thing of ripping it down to 36". 36" X 98" is still a good size table but much easier to maneuver around.

Thanks for the info. I'm not familiar with that channel, but I'm going to try and find it.

A 36" or 30" wide table will be much easier to work around, than a 48".

timothy thompson -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/7/2008 8:35:16 PM)

it has to be wide enough for the wing and fuse so untill i actually unroll the plans i wont know exact dinensions

ram3500-RCU -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/7/2008 11:05:38 PM)

Another thing I thought about was maybe ripping 12" off and then using some piano hinges and making a fold-down section across the front.

timothy thompson -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/7/2008 11:44:20 PM)

well due to our 18 inches of snow, shipment will be tomorrow. until the work table is here i can build the bomb bay section its all interlocked construction. The rest needs the bench. I have to get the guns next week and every 2 weeks parts. So it will take a long time to build this monster esp with all scale interior and turrets the function. Anyone have any good closeup pics or know of good books

I recommend the Scale&Detail books. They have many pictures and 3 views, but also have 3 views with all the major dimensions. From their it is a simple matter to divide by whatever scale you are building in. The 'Walk Around' books are nice, but don't provide these valuable dimensioned drawings.

timothy thompson -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/8/2008 1:57:30 AM)

yea the best thing is to get a cd walkaround. i did find a book at barnes and noble on the b-17 12 dollars all color pics. i dont worry about scale outline as mike has done that this kit is 100% SCALE IN OUTLINE AND AIRFOIL. im doing the f model as it is a likttle cheaper but most f models were od and i wanted to do Flite Metal. So i need to find an f that was all silver.
My second approach is go od and do chow hound out of bassingborne england. colorful nose art. crew names were painted on their positions.

timothy thompson -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/9/2008 2:53:47 AM)

well i recieved some of the kit today the plans and all wood. i began by laminating bomb bay bulkhears and wing spars. they need to dry overnight as i used 60 min epoxy for strength

timothy thompson -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/10/2008 2:49:57 AM)

here is the bomb bay section

timothy thompson -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/10/2008 4:43:08 AM)

my only complaint is there are no instructions or a hardware list. For example the plans show how to work the bomb bay but do not tell you what mike used. he has patail instructions on a pdf file but i hope for the price he adds to his site. More info from anyone who has one of these would be great

no thanks helps a lot. thanks

Scotsman -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/10/2008 2:12:18 PM)

Tim,

There are also a few good build threads on www.Rcscalebuilder.com. Look in the forums and there is a folder dedicated to Wingspan models. They are awesome kits and a great design. What engines are you considering?

timothy thompson -> RE: wingspan b-17 (2/10/2008 5:59:58 PM)

im going e power eflite power 1.20 or axi 5260. shes a leccy. question the ball turret area leaves a lot to the imagination i willl upload a pic. it shows half a floor.
