I have the Exceed Xtreem 1/10th Forza Buggy (2 speed) with the VX18 motor. Should there be some slight resistance when pushing the car backwards with the motor off, or is the engine up too tight against the gears? Here's the history:
Car is brand new and never been run yet
Had to remove motor to install electric starter backing plate
One of the 4 screws that holds the engine mounts to the frame of the car was frozen in the mount so now there are 3 screws holding the engine in place
there is no resistance when pushing the car forward - only backwards and it is very slight and there is some gear noise

What do you guys think?

it should be smooth both ways. You are getting some binding there and even if it's a little it's not good. So loosen up the screw and reposition them and try again until no binding, that way you gear will last.

Thanks for the quick response. I will readjust before starting it up.

What break in procedure do you recommend for the VX18 engine?

I say let it idle for 2 tanks at least.

not that andy doesn't know his stuff but i would use the five tank traxxas method. thats what i did and my vx 18 runs fantastic. it has tons of power and it starts every time in 2 pulls. usually first pull. and i run mine out in the snow. i had it running today in 12 degree weather. you can also look up redcatracing.com and look at the break in procedure there. i have the volcano sv with the vx 18.

go to your local hardware store and get some hex head screws for the engine mounts. i had the same problem with my volcano. in fact one screw was stripped when i took it out of the box. i put hex screws and no problem. it only cost me 68 cents for the screws. just bring one with you so you get the right length and threads.

are you seriously telling him to idle 2 tanks for break in???????

do you use rc's? That is no way a proper break in, lol. you better learn how to give better advice before you become support for rc's

listen to ranger4x4 bro, do a 5 tank break in, dont let the car idle. go to you tube and look up traxxas break in.

there should be a little resistance since the one way will catch when going backwards, not alot though. your probably ok, just make sure there is a little play between the clutch bell and spur gears, very little play, make sure to put some blue loctite on those screws so they dont back out on you, its a good idea to put it on all metal to metal screws.

For the break in, what if we don't have that big of an area available, as described in the traxxas method for step 5? I also live in an area where the weather is around 35-45 Fahrenheit this time of year, so should that method be fine? I also do not have an infrared thermometer (Nor can I afford one after todays shopping spree consisting of hex wrenches, fuel, oils, ect...) So I am not sure of what method to use.

do the spit test. wipe some spit on the head. if it evaporates right away it too lean. if it just sits there too rich. gone 3-5 seconds just right
