OK boys,

Where do I place my aileron and elevator servos with reference to the hinge line? I would believe the closer to the hinge line ie: shortest linkage length, would be ideal, but isn't their a "standard" linkage length that you are working for? I can cut foam anywhere, so I might as well try and do somthing different and get it right the first time [8D].

Hardware is a personal preference, give me your "this works best" method please. For what it is worth, my decisions are for a 30% 300 that I will be adding the TOC mods to (increased elevator, rudder and ailerons). Planning on a standard 1 in arm length and 3D throws.

Doug,

Could you get 3" Hangar 9 titanium pushrods, 4-40 ball links, and Nelson control horns? Put those pieces together on a Servo and measure it. The control horns will be over your hinge line and the total set up will show you were to place the servo. It's one way.

On the plans you should be able to measure how far from the hinge line the servo box is which will then determine the length of the linkage you will need. I know on my 35% Dalton 260 the servos are like 3/4 inch. away from the hinge line. Don't quote me on that but I am pretty sure it is close to that. But as I said the plans should tell you how far, at least my Dalton plans did....

And of course, for the stabs, you also need to ensure that the servo placement will not interfere with the anti-rotation pins or stab tube socket and perhaps most importantly that the airfoil at the selected location is deep enough to allow the servo to be fully seated.

All good advice. My plans do not give the detail on servo placement (left up to the builder) and as for the stabs, the design calls for a non-removable surface so tube and pins won't be an issue. Ward, you read my mind, I stopped by the local shop today and picked up some 3" hangar 9 titanium rods, 4-40 links and hangar 9 8/32" control horns. I figure I will start there, and now knowing I can get the rods in 1/2" links from 2-5" I should be able to figure this out pretty fast.

What size push rod do you end up with usually with the 3-3/4 off-set?

I ended up at 4" to the output shaft from the hinge line, which by my figures = linkages plus a 2.5 rod.
