AFSalmon -> OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/7/2008 1:48:41 AM)

Recently I have been redesigning the old 47" Yak 54 with new construction techniques similar to the V3 Edge. It will have a tubed and sheeted fuselage, two piece wing that can be left as two-piece or permanently glued to the fuse. Longer tail moment and bigger tail feathers. Wings will be thinner and all new airfoils and tapers. The new Yak should proof to be the perfect intermediate to advanced 40 size profile and fit nicely between the V3 Edge which is the 3D trainer and the 52" Fusion which is clearly in the advanced class.

I started scratching out a prototype this weekend and here are the pics of the fuse and tail feathers. I'll start working on the wings this weekend.
My hopes are to have the first run beta kits available by the Toledo show.

That looks great. Will this plane have a wing tube for the 2 piece wing? The picture of the fuse doesn't look like it has a spot for a phanolic tube.

AKFireMedic -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/7/2008 8:01:22 AM)

Perfect! Put me down for a Beta tester will ya Mike? Pretty Please!!

Spacey -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/7/2008 10:04:14 AM)

Naaaaah forget about AKFireMedic! Get one of them suckers strapped to those pigeons on the 30% nitro that brought me the Fusion! My little old Yak has lived a few years past its expiry date already. [sm=devious.gif]

Gimme gimme gimme!!!! [:D] [:D]

AFSalmon -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/7/2008 1:07:02 PM)

Nah, no wing tubes. I'm going to use the new super magnets to hold the wings on. [:D]

Just kidding. Since this prototype is being hand built and no laser parts I will use a template guide to cut the holes for the twin wing tubes, landing gear and anti rotation points. Just have not done that yet. When I get the root ribs cut out I'll stack all together and drill at the same time to assure a perfect match.

Spacey -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/7/2008 1:32:28 PM)

What was that? It's finished already and the first proto kit is ready for shipping? Wow? I'll start cleaning the bench!

AFSalmon -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/13/2008 12:06:20 AM)

I got the wings finished but still need to build the ailerons. Here are a couple of pics of the parts put together. Anyone have a cool name for this Yak?

jeide -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/13/2008 5:23:14 AM)

Hi Mike. Send me some parts , I'll put it together and come up with a great name. Jim

Spacey -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/13/2008 7:34:01 AM)

Well, seeing as everyone else is doing it just call it the "Salmon Yak"! lol

Jim, I figured you would be dying to get the first 80" Fusion kit next! haha I'm working on that one as we speak as well. [:D]

jeide -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/16/2008 5:23:30 AM)

Hi Mike. When's the big Fusion going to be ready? I have an empty work bench and am starting to get the shakes. Jim

AFSalmon -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/16/2008 10:54:10 PM)

Within 6 weeks Jim. Give me a call or John and pre-order over the phone. I'll be holding one for you!

AFSalmon -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/21/2008 1:48:58 PM)

I've been slow on this project but finally got some time to start covering. Here is the progress so far. I like the color combinations of yellow, red, and black and will also put some silver or charcoal trimmings on it as well. I can't wait to test fly this new bird. With all the modifications from the original OMP Yak, this should be drastically different and hopefully be a perfect intermediate profile between the Edge and Fusions. I'll post more pics as I make progress on the covering.

Hmm, not bad. I've been trying to think of a new name for this Yak as well. For some reason I keep coming back to "sixpack Yak"! LOL

As for the green, I knew someone would say that! Trust me it ALMOST got some green on it but I switched to black and red over yellow at the last minute. I forgot how good that looked on the Boxxer we did. I got some more covering done last night and will get on it tonight. I'm hoping to have it all done ready to fly by the end of the weekend. Then comes the wait for good weather. [:@]

"Heart-A-Yak" I like yours to but this came to me later.

I got to get out more.

SukhoiKid -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/25/2008 3:00:33 AM)

looks good so far. got plenty of 46 engines!!!!

IowaSilvia -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/25/2008 5:01:24 AM)

WELL!!! How's it fly?

AFSalmon -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/25/2008 1:29:28 PM)

I worked all weekend on this and got a lot done. All the covering is done except for some silver trim and graphics. Need to go to the hobby shop for supplies first. All the surfaces are hinged and the stab is glued in place. The landing gear is installed and the total airframe weight at that point was 2 lbs 2.5 oz. I've since installed all the radio gear and set up the radio. Need to install the engine and fuel tank and then she will be ready for the maiden flight. I'm pretty sure I'll be done before Mother Nature gives us a good flying day.

Besides the Fusion 90 ARF.....that's the best color scheme from OMP yet![8D]

Hey thanks John. I'll admit I struggle with schemes and played with this one for probably a week! I got the silver trim on last night and it looks much better. Needs graphics now. I'll post more updated pictures tomorrow.

bbagle1 -> RE: OMP New 47" Yak 54 Version 3 (2/26/2008 5:00:10 PM)

You should name it "3D Yak". Any plane with 3D in the name will surely sell.
