Since I decided to go to SPADFest this year I have been debating what planes to bring with me. I know for sure my new SPA3DT I am building is going, but not sure what else. I have some spare radio gear and an extra TT Pro .46 I would like to use to build something really fast. Lately I have had a bit of the need for speed. What do you guys reccomend?

Put that TT .46 in a Sickle if you want fast. I upsized mine to a 44" span with the TT .46 and it moves along rather smartly.

I looked at both designs and they are cool! I have always really liked the sickle though. I think I may try that. When you upwsize the wingspan what else do you need to change in the plans?

You up the wingspan, up the chord AND move the fuse from the top of the wing to the bottom. They are both essentially the same, well, I used the Club Racer wing on the Flipper instead of the Sickle wing, but the Club Racer wing is just a stretched Sickle. The fuse underneath was just to make it easier to launch for me.

I built a Sickle with an OS .46 AX turning a 10x7 prop... this thing moves along nicely! 3lbs 4oz AUW. I shed a a few ounces off that by going with a 4xAAA Rx pack. Built a coroplast fuselage and moved back the tail a bit for the fin.

Don't mind the inverted pic - I have this hanging on my office ceiling. It's fun to fly and the vertical climb out when flying slow and going to WOT is wicked. Ponder trimming the aileron tips to help minmize flutter too.

Hand launching takes some getting used to if you've not done it before. Launching this plane at WOT... the plane snaps outta my hand and is a ways away before I can get my right hand on my controller. Good times.

As Clean stated, I increased everything by the same percentage as the span. With the TT .46 the hand launch is not an issue nor is it launch as much as it is a simple release. I hold the plane with the nose straight up and release it. It climbs straight up out of my hands.

Regarding these hand launches, be careful and stay on your toes when you're figuring it out. I read about a guy hand launching that had an accident. Had his plane at a 45 degree angle, throttled up and just at that moment, a gust blew the plane and it tipped back over the guys grip and the prop hit the guy's face. That'll ruin your day quick.

Sweet plane Somegeek. I think that is the direction I'm leaning right now. It looks cool and shoould be plenty fast with the TT pro 46. Should be a missle in fact. Now I just got to find some time to finish my SPA3DT.

Thanks, TruBlu02! It's a lot of fun to fly. Landing is a bit hot. My knees were shaking a little after I opened it up for it's first high speed pass.

I added a skid plate to the wing since my club's landing strip is a tough plastic mesh material. Landing on the grass in the summer is not an option as it's dry and dusty(would be hell on my engine).

That TT .46 will move it nicely! You can definitely mess around with a range of props to prop it for speed / sport or somewhere in between.

Some more build pics if you're interested.

I've been flying on a 10x7 which moves nicely but I have a 9x8 I need to try next.

Thanks for the link. I remember reading that thread awhile back. I think i am still going to stick with the PVC fuse as it is easier for me to work with. I am just waiting on some Carbon Fiber gear to show up for my SPA3DT then hopefully it will be done this week sometime. Then I can start looking into this. What size fuel tank did you end up going with?

If you want fast build one of these...

Its my own design, using a modified draco wing with a much more streamlined sickle type fuz but mid mounting the wing and trimmed the elevons right down to stop flutter.

I had a SC 52 turning an 11x8 and man did it shift...

Theres a build thread here

That thing was moving!

Curious if MrClean can give us guestimate on the speed with doppler just for kicks

Very clean lines and great looking

Damn - that thing moves! Really like what you did with the fuselage to taper the back end. Will have to ponder that for a future build.

Thanks for sharing the pics.
