the latest shipment of AT40s from TopRC are not *real* AT40s. They've got a flimsy light-ply fuselage with big cut-outs

That's a shame - I was thinking of getting another one and hot-rodding it and really giving it a thrashing.

blw - The World models Skyraider comes in 2 versions - Mach I (high wing) and Mach II (low wing). The low wing version is the one used for Club 40 pylon racing.

The AT 40 is a very cheap basic trainer designed for .40 engines. It is well made (for a chinese ARF) and can take a lot of abuse. The construction is (was) a bit more solid than the Mach II skyraider. I haven't seen it advertised through American hobby shops. I'm not sure who makes it. But from what X-Jet is saying, it sounds like it's not the same as it used to be.

The Skyraider Mach 2 is an excellent model for 46-55 sized motors but I don't know that it would hold up to a powerful 61. It too is pretty light balsa/ply construction but they really honk with a fast 46 in them.

The AT40 trainer however, is an iconic "old school" ARF that uses solid balsa with ply doublers for the fuselage and that makes them incredibly strong. I've never seen an AT40 wing fold up either. It's just a shame that the Chinese saw an opportunity to cut costs by replacing the balsa with thin ply filled with lightening holes in the new version.

Thanks for the info. Interesting.

XJet- A lot of decisions on ARFs make no sense at all.

I'll be testing my engine on a Sky Raider Mach 2. The fuse on these planes is all ply and it very durable. I've had mine in a full speed dive powered by a Supertigre 51 and it held. We'll see how it handles this 61. Should be fine though as someone in the Pylon forums put a Jett60 on theirs with no problem.

The only problem you might have is with the CG. A .61 weighs a bit more than a .51 so you may have to get creative with your battery placement to keep the CG within reasonable limits.

On my AT40 the battery is behind the wing in order to get the CG right.

Mike,

Let us know how it flies with the .61

I'll post my results. It will be a week or more though until I have time to mount it and pipe it. Need to find a tube to go between the pipe and the manifold. also need to find some 5% fuel, or do you think 10% will work with more head shims?

Mike,

From the clip (XJet) Bruce posted, this engine seems to run so nicely on 0-5%...

Why bother and change the setup, to force it to run more nitro?

Sometimes more is actually less...

Mike,

This engine is ABC, so make sure that gallon has a good measure of castor oil.

Sig Champion and PowerMaster GMA are good. Or you can get Brian Cooper's +C.

It'll be up tomorrow (in about 24hrs time) at *LONG* last.

I've been juggling too many balls of late but have spent the last couple of days working on the site with a lot more stuff to add over the next few weeks.

Can anyone offer some more advice on freeing up the carb barrel? I've buffed it lightly yet when the spring in in behind the barrel and the throttle stop screw is in just enough to hold the barrel it really binds. I tried to buff inside the carb body but I can only get in there halfway before hitting the spraybar.

I replaced the spring in my carby with a lighter one - the original was way too strong.

The other thing is to check that the two tubes which comprise the spray bar/metering setup aren't binding. They were slightly out of alignment in mine and that meant the barrel would bind at certain angles even without the spring or barrel-retaining screw in place.

OK, I'll double check that but I'm pretty sure it's just the spring as without it the barrel moves smoothly.
