Always assume that the prop is going to fly off at any moment or that it'll sling a blade.

This means *never* stand in front of the engine (at anything more than idle RPMs) and *never* stand in line with the prop-disk (even at idle).

This is particularly true with 4-strokes, some of which can throw a prop in the blink of an eye if you are a bit lean.

So true. Sad to see that just so few comprehend this.

Wasn't there a thread about a .40 LA turning over 20,000 RPM on a big prop about a year ago? I remember something about that one.

Dar and Cyber- I was referring to the assertion that the 11x7 is a 46 sized prop. but a 12x6 is 60 sized. What the heck kind of logic is that? Is a 13x5 a 90 sized prop. then?

Duh" maybe the manufacters logic and recomendations????? Please read what they have to say.

Sounds like the rear bearing going out may have caused more problems than you was aware of Xjet.
We can hope this was a one time faulty crank from the manufacture but something tells me its not.
If its a stress point (design error)or a hardness issue they all may do the same thing. I personally am not looking forward to having a crank break, this could be a very dangerous to anyone close to the engine.

Kmot your RPM's are not to impressive, I would expect a rear exhaust engine of high perf nature to develope quite a few more especially useing a prop for a 46-50 sized engine.
Oh well sounds like the old saying still holds true, If its to good to be true it prolly isn't.

I did finally got a email stating my engine has been sent.

-----------------

Back in the day of classic pattern flying, the 11x7 was a .60 sized prop. The smaller engines that you mentioned used 10x6 to 11x6 sized props. No .45 back then could pull an 11x7 satisfactorily. In my opinion, they still don't. I won't over prop my engines just to make less noise. I'll find a more tolerant flying site instead. Two-strokes are designed to run "on the boil", not be lugged down, unless they are specifically designed for that particular task, like the OS.61RF and Hanno engines.

Since Dar Zeelon referenced Jett Engines as the benchmark, here is something to think about. Dub Jett lists his Sport Jett FIRE 60L specifications using an APC 11x6 prop. On Powermaster 15% nitro fuel it turns 15000 rpm, and I presume he is also using his tuned pipe.

Jett FIRE .60L R/C ABC

And remember, I turned an MA 10x7 at 17510 rpm on 0% nitro fuel.

Jett FIRE .60LX High Performance ABC
18,000
10x6

In no way am I comapring this Russian engine to the quality of a Jett. I own two Jett engines. I am just showing the comparisons to a Jett since Dar referenced Jett as the benchmark engine.

I am just trying to have some fun running and tweaking this thing and telling you guys about it.

The Jett is a tremendous engine, probably the best on the market in many aspects.

I went back to the Dave Gierke comparison article in MAN a few years ago and noticed the Fox .60 spun the 11x6 APC at 13,500 rpm. That was on 5%, but using the stock muffler. I don't remember the numbers for the Tower .61, but they were in the same ballpark. Both engines were far ahead of all others in that test. I know this info isn't exactly what you were looking for, but it gives a ballpark estimate.

....clearly, the Jett .60LX is not a "benchmark" engine....."benchmark" is the standard
by which others are judged. The Jett is a 40/46 sized hybrid, hot rod engine that
makes more power than the old standards. It uses small props for high RPMs....

....apples and oranges.

FBD.

Tom,

I do not think the Jett .60L poses as a benchmark...

What a .60 size engine can do on a .40 size prop is clearly not benchmark material...

The only justification to this appearance is the fact that this specific engine is the size and weight of a .40... But it definitely isn't a .40 engine...

Since the generally accepted .60 size prop is a 12x6, if the Jett .60L is to be considered a benchmark .60 engine, it must spin that prop faster than any other engine of the same displacement.

But, for the RPM hungry Jett, the 12x6 APC is a .90 size prop...

And... The MA prop that you used is a particularly low load prop, that cannot be compared to an APC, for instance, with which Jett stated RPM numbers are quoted.

Spinning that prop at 17,510 RPM, according to the PropPower, requires 1.93 HP.

Spinning an APC 10x6 prop at 17,510 RPM, according to the PropPower, requires 2.02 HP.
The Jett .60LX spins this prop at 18K (2.20 HP)... It also cost $405-...

We're not comparing competitive items...

Really!!! The Jett is an overachiever not a standard engine. Compared to other engines this Russian MAS ("not for export" MDS model) is not bad. Do you really want to feel better? I bought mine back before the Iron curtain fell and had it smuggled in at a cost of $150.00. I ran it once and it is a side exhaust model. I'm a collector so after the curtain fell a lot of what I had was more widely available. This thing is a bargain. I also have a Tarjka .60 which is really cool but I haven't seen any of those available or discussed. If you know anything about them drop me a line.

If any engine was to be used as a basis for comparison then I'd suggest the OS 61VF. Maybe I should find a suitable prop and fire mine up just for laughs . Zero nitro of course.

My OS .61 VF with a Macs .60 pipe ran 14,400 - 14,500 with the APC 11 x 7 and 13,500 - 13,600 with the APC 12 x 6. This was on 15% nitro and 18% Omega Pink oil.

Running 80/20 Omega Pink (no nitro) reduced these numbers by about 300 - 400 rpm.

Comparing the MDS .61 to a JetT .61 seems a little silly IMHO.

Why are we argueing? Why not just enjoy the thing for what it is ... a good value low cost RE .61 you can put on a pipe.

Let's hope this thread stays on focus ... I am thinking of picking one up, seeing there are still plenty in stock. Who needs a reason at $49-?

Mine is on it's way...

"Your mileage may vary" seems to fit well here. Reminds me of speeds....Subjective but apparently VERY arguable. Perception is reality I guess.
