Dave,

Good point about pets. I have them too and would never do that indoors.

Your small tank is one like I used for sandblasting wood signs as there was big money in that. We mostly used a rough grade of silica sand on redwood, but carborundum for oak. You could always recycle the sand for a finer grit to be used on finer surfaces on other projects. You could sandtext with that tank if you were willing to learn what that is about. Very fine sand was always used on metal surfaces.

I'm not trying to 'discredit' your methods about right way to do engine work, but it appears that I've done this on more levels than you have. I'm just pointing out that there is more to it when doing it right.

Using the wrong nozzles has a lot to do with the end result. Also, just getting any sand usually means uncontrolled pitting and distribution. It means uneven subtraction and rearranging the surface. It means uneven heating of the metal as it is being cut away and heated up. Heat is everything with the sandblasting technique. Using a nozzle made for this method means a very controlled spray for a good surface. If you don't use a metal nozzle, the whole volume changes as the sand eats it away.

Glass beads and metal beads mostly pound the surface and are best for smoothing. It usually gives you more time to work with it as it is not as abrasive. Smooth granite is done this way.

I'm sure your method works fine for you, Dave. I just prefer doing it better is all.

....sand blasting indoors ? You are kidding, right ? No, I actually have a place outdoors to work,
my welding area where I can sand blast away. My air compressor is in the garage, not in my
living room.

So, it looks like you are talking about blasting wood. I'm not. I'm talking about bead blasting rods.
Connecting rods. The rods we use in our model engines and the racing engines I built over a two
decade span as a Pro engine builder. I'm not talking about blasting granite or guns. Just rods.

blw: Sorry, but you are wrong here

No, Barry....I'm absolutely correct, sorry.

If you would like to talk further about sand blasting wood, or guns, or tombstones we can go to
the off-topic Forum.

I'm trying to help my fellow modelers with a problem that I know exists in these particular model
engines, and offering a technique that I have been using for 38 years (I know I said 40 before)
that is a time tested proven way to alleviate the stress related failures. I learned my trade from
an Expert AMA Professional Harley Davidson factory rider named Willie Hill, and he is the one
who hired me to work in his Yamaha dealership. Willie was a machinist and an engine
builder aside from his racing, that's all he ever did his whole life. I was blessed to have him
as my mentor and teacher.

I do know how to stress relieve connecting rods using sand/bead blasting techniques.

FBD.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with this business, I just bought an engine and am pleased with the product and price.

In another thread somewhere we were discussing a Russian MAC FIRE 10cc. I found out a biz has them for sale at a bargain price of $39.99!

http://www.hobbyclub.com/product_info.php?cPath=44_75&products_id=291

They come with a lot of spare parts included! What a bargain! They are packed in cosmolene and so will need to be disassembled partially and flushed with solvent. There are numbers on the mounting lug, not sure but may indicate date of manufacture. If so, then these engines I have were made in 1992.

I would grab one while you still have the chance. At this price, it is almost a give-a-way. You get two glow plugs with it, plus many spare gaskets and o-rings.

Kmot, I see you tried out the MAC at Hobbyclub. I was the one that gave the heads-up previously. I purchased a little Cipolla 09 there about two years ago. I see Alberto did raise the price now. (he must have had a rush after the mention of it in the "other" forum) The engine had been at the $39.95 price for at least six months now! Anyway, I've got another "secret buy" for you engine freaks out there. It is the Novarossi 60- four port engine at www.planethobby.com. Beautiful worksmanship and machining, it is a buy at only $119. As Kmot said, I have no business affiliation with the company, just a satisfied customer. Ross

Thanks for the 'contest' fella's. lol...

I have not sand blasted rods, but I do polish them which relieves high point stresses.

.....good one, Kmot.....is that part of "Blue Man Group" ?? LOL

It's getting harder and harder to help people these days.

Yep, we polished rods too, but we stressed relieved them first. Don't tell anyone,

....it's a racing secret.

It's good to get the thread back on track and these are nice looking engines. Kmot do you have performance numbers on yours yet?

Looks like a decent engine...but don't the bearings look a little small? Other than that, not bad (I guess ) for the $$...

That NovaRossi is now $188. I would have bought one at $119.

I might still order one of the MDs's. I'd like to see a performance report, though.

Jezmo- we got into the idea of polishing the conrods by sandblasting.

Xjet- I'm sending you a PM about your settings.

The screw spacing on the exhaust port is 34mm.
....

Tom,

This bolt spacing means any exhaust designed for the MVVS .61-.91 RE would fit this engine and these are very attractively priced, compared to Macs...

In fact, anything made for the OS.61V and later Webra #1030 Racing will also fit, but these are much, much steeper in price.

Brian,

Is the OS.61V (the rear-exhaust version of the .61FSR), identical to the later VF?

I don't have that old .61V any more, so I am not sure. You're probably right.

So, Tom, you'd have to stick with MVVS RE items...
