kmot,

Please update us when you get a chance to run this thing. What size prop do you think you will start with?

It's an MDS RIRE 10cc sport/pattern engine, MDS looks like "MAC" in Cyrillic. That engine probably dates to the mid 1980's or early 1990's. Mine have the year hand-buzzer engraved on the case. A buddy of mine and I used to import them into Canada in small numbers, long before MDS began to be imported "commercially" to North America, with some cosmetic changes and whatever else.

As I recall, we used to get the .40 FISE for USD$20-25, and these RIRE .60's for maybe $35 or so. They came plastered with preservative, kind of a messy greasy waxy yellow guck that did the job quite well. Guys around here used the "MAC" .40's as they called them as horse around Q500 engines at times, and they hauled reasonably well. They do not like much nitro. 5% tops for that .60 will be fine, and it will run on FAI but 5% idles and transitions better as you might expect. I have two of these and 2 or 3 of those .40's buried in my collection still.

The internal machining is very nice, the exterior can be rough here and there, especially the machine screws.. the examples we used to get all used slot head screws, and I swear the slots were cut by hand, they were often far enough off center you could easily see it. Most are strong runners, but toss the supplied plug after maybe the first couple of short WFO runs, IOW treat them as "early break-in" plugs. Unless the plugs with this one are different, and that is entirely possible with this level of production.

MJD: It's a FIRE

FBD, bore and stroke? Geez, you are really trying to make me work aren't you!

Dave, I dunno. Probably a sport 60 type prop.

Okay, MJD is right on about the greasy yellow waxy preservative. It kept everything rust free. It's very tenacious. Nothing some good old fashioned McKay Carb Cleaner couldn't handle!

The screws are slotted and the heads are soft. I am replacing the slotted screws with Allen socket head screws. I had to chase two of the backplate screw holes to clean them up. I also cleaned up some burrs on the intake ports in the cylinder, and some casting slag in the ports in the crankcase and the exhaust. So yeah, this engine is a 'jewel in the rough'. I still like it. I enjoy tuning these little guys.

Here it is, all cleaned up and ready for assembly. I added a little bling to the head.

Anyone else have their order "pending" for over 4 business days like me? I keep checking my order status and it has the date of the order, the order number, but "pending" as the status. If this place is slow that's fine. Just curious.

....Tom....the typical 60 size head pipe measures .790 -.792 (fluctuations). Typically you
need about a 1" rise in the pipe to clear the fuse.

FBD.

Nope, just a little slow I guess. Just got this email, and a "paid" invoice copy.

It's going out today.
Thanks for your support,

I just got hold of a Rossi pipe today, from Rossi Engines USA. Man, what a piece of crap looking thing the guy sent me. Looks like it was brushed with a wire wheel. The aluminum is all galled and trashy looking. I can't believe it. I thought Rossi was good stuff? I can't tell if it has been painted with silver paint, or just looks that trashy from being wire wheeled or something.
