....yep.

....that's what I've been trying to communicate.... You have to find out what you have, then
think about what you want to do with it. Just slapping a pipe on a engine doesn't mean it will
do what you hoped it would.

Just got mine today but I'm wondering if something's wrong with it. It barely turns over, like the bearings are partially seized. Looking at the front one there is some green corrosion on the front. Anyone else experience this? I suppose I should pull it all apart and see if there's any metal in the bearings.

The engine is packed with a cosmolene type preservative. You will need to completely degrease it, inside and out. The bearings on mine felt that way too, until I degreased them. The front bearing has a brass cage, that green stuff is just brass tarnish.

How tight was yours before you degreased. I cannot even turn the crank by hand. I put a prop on and even then the collet wanted to slip before the crank would turn. What did you use to degrease yours?

I had to put a jam nut on mine to get it to move at all. That was to help get it apart. Even with it hot from the oven it was really sticky. Mine had injested a good deal of cosmolene.... I mean a good deal of it...... I tore mine completely apart to clean it up. That and there seems to be some sort of adhesive on the bearing races... Anybody else seen this yet? This stuff is really sticky and sort of rubbery. It's on the outer race of the rear bearing.... and some of it is in the bearing...... What range of dates are you guys seeing? Mine is Feb 89.

Ditto.

I completely disassembled mine and used good old fashioned McKay Carb Cleaner to degrease everything. Even at that, not every speck of the cosmolene was dissolved from the rear bearing. Perhaps if I left it in the witches brew longer but typically I leave parts in for about 5 minutes and that always does the trick (normally). What I finally did with the rear bearing is use my Monokote gun to get it good and hot, and then introduced some Marvel Mystery Oil into it and that completed the dissolving process and lubed the bearing at the same time.

Think cooking it in antifreeze would work? I still have a crockpot full of it from the last engine I cleaned. Certainly easy to drop in and come back later.

I have only tried antifreeze in a crockpot once. I was not satisfied with the results. After overnight in a crockpot full of antifreeze at around 210°F it still needed to be put into McKays. Could be that I am spoiled by using McKay carb cleaner. So I don't know if antifreeze would do the job.

In case the price gets raised just remember these were incredibly cheap at the time they were made, the examples we brought in in the early-mid '90's cost us about USD$40 each! So don't go too nuts.. The examples I have remaining are identical, never run 'em, and it is a bear to turn due to the preservative as you guys have found out. I am anxious to hear some performance numbers, nobody ever got back to us with numbers at the time. Yep, those screws shure is ugly.

Soon, grasshopper, soon.

I still need to make some adapters to be able to mount this engine into my PSP test stand.

I did however, find an 11x7.5 prop and bored it to 8mm and balanced it.

No head pipe. But I do have a muffling system I can use while breaking in the engine (in my backyard). It is a Chapman V-Pipe and I can just connect it to the round header on the engine with a large piece of silicone tubing. This is the same thing I used when I was running in my Jett FIRE 120.

Here is mine.
I took it apart and cleaned it with aceton first, it took the gunk out good, wiped it clean and washed the parts in 99% alcohol. put some oil on it and done. looks good but have seen better. arounf the ports crome and machining does not look so hot but should be ok. I cant wait to run it, If its good or even desent I will get couple more, its great for the price.
