any chance they chose to use a bearing retaining compound for some reason ??

How did things fit up after reassembly ?

I have the same suspicion that they use an anaerobic compound on the bearings. Seeing as QC and/or the perception thereof is certainly a factor in the make or break of a product, and often the first thing that pops to mind with products from some areas of the world especially, they either (a) do it as standard practice, or (b) have some concern over production fits.

I know we know they are meant for low nitro, but just as a reminder I don't think you should exceed 5% with these. An MDS .48 was the first engine I had run - in the usual .25-.61 sport engine range - that showed immediate obvious signs of displeasure in stock head trim with 15%. So methinks MDS engines are not conservative in the compression ratio department.

I added 2 additional head shims (they came with the motor) making it 3 total. I didn't mic them, but they appeared to be some where around .005 each. I only run one fuel, and thats Powermaster 15% NITRO, so we'll see how it does with that. If I have to raise the head more, I will.

If the engine is designed to run on zero nitro, it's probably a high-comp engine. I think
I would have put all the shims in. The high-comp and the possible questionable metallurgy
may be responsible for the broken rods and crankshafts in the early MDS engines. I use
15% PM fuel for the most part as well, but I also use 5% in the Rossi's and 20/20 in the
YS engines....all PowerMaster.

The figures Kmot got were not impressive, but he had the makeshift exhaust on it.
You really have to run it open pipe to see what you have.

Also, it is far from being broken in. It only has 20 minutes on it so far. I expect the power will increase a tad as it get more and more broken in.

I also thought the exhaust was constrictive, as well as running it rich with 80/20 fuel.

I think this motor has potential, just not sure it will be consistent from motor to motor.

Found a spinner nut for it today. 8mm x 1.25 from Dubro in Black.

Fits nice, and should do a good job.

Weighed the motor tonight, and it came in at 20.4 oz as it looks in the picture with prop nut and prop.

FYI, Sheldon's is selling off a bunch of their NOS Mac's headers and pipes you-know-where. Some of the Mac's 10cc RE headers are as little as $9.99 Buy Now. I'm sure there's one in there that will fit this engine.

Mine came with a stub adapter with internal o-ring groove, and only need a header/riser tube. Did this one have one?

RD - good link/tip, thanks!

Yes MJD, these come with the stub designed for internal header tube.

I looked over the Sheldons 'blow out' and did not find anything that was a particularly good deal. The pricing is just about normal everyday prices on the various headers.

Yeah, things are adding up:

39.99 motor
10.00 shipping
9.20 spinner nut
2 cans of brake cleaner at $3.19 each

sub total of $65.57 and I still need a pipe/header.

I didn't see any great deals at the "blow out" either.

Well I bought the 3rd one you listed Dave.

Mac's Helo Quiet PIPE #1701 10.cc

Not sure I can get away with the muffled or straight tuned pipe at my field.

Anyone know a cheap header for that pipe?

I'm up to $89 now, and not finished....

Still a bargain (if it runs reliably and strongly enough).

Even a Thunder Tiger 61GP is $89 and they only last "so long" when you thrash the snot out of them (I posted the pictures elsewhere to show what happens ;-)

If these Russian engines provide as much fun as my 61GP did then they'll be a real bargain, even after you've added a pipe, etc.

Why did you go for a spinner-nut anyway, what was wrong with the stock nut?
