X-jet, I'll take your idle bar plug ... and put it to good use in an ancient baffle piston ENYA.

PM your address and I'll send a reply paid envelope

I keep a good stock of idle-bar plugs here for some of my other engines -- but they've got a machined bar, not a spot-welded one.

I've seen the results of a spot-welded idle-bar coming adrift at full song, it wasn't pretty :-(

But you're welcome to this one, I won't be using it. PM me with your address and I'll post it to you.

Part of the fun of this engine is 'dialing it in'.

PM'd you X-jet.

Once I get the plug I'll post a performance report on it here ... most people bin the plugs supplied with MDS engines without using them; I wonder just how bad they are ...

Well I fired up the MDS today and it started first flip. I just guessed at the needle setting and was half a turn on the rich side.

It seemed to run pretty good right from the get-go, except that it does have some wicked-bad vibes at about half throttle.

I couldn't get the MCP mounted properly on this plane so I just threw the pipe on and I estimate the ground RPMs with a 11x7 MAS Scimitar prop was about 12,500-13,000 -- which didn't impress me very much, it obviously wasn't "on the pipe".

However, once I got it in the air you could hear it step up onto the pipe and it suddenly gained (best guess) about 1,000-1,200 RPMs.

It's definitely putting out good power -- and I haven't even started tuning the pipe yet (in fact it may be a little short for this 11x7 prop - I'll have to see if I've got a 11x6 or maybe try the 10x8 I've got here somewhere.

No attempt was made to set the idle mixture (remembering that I stripped the carby down and simply used "a good guess" for the initial settings. Despite that it idles *very* nicely -- albeit the transition is quite fat (but no worse than your average Super Tiger) -- which I expected. This was never designed to be a 3D engine :-)

The first run was with some hi-castor (20%) fuel with just 5% nitro. I fitted a single head-shim just to avoid detonation -- incase this pipe wasn't well suited to the engine.

I'll tach the engine on the weekend and see what I can do to get rid of the really bad vibes.

Oh, and I was using a really crappy old glowplug (which I always do when breaking in any engine, since the microscopic metal particles released during break-in often foul the filament.

After the first flight the exhaust oil was the typical mid-brown color you expect from a castor fuel when used with a pipe.

By Monday I'll have more data and know whether I'm going to snap up some more of these engines while they last ;-)

Just an update on my MDS 61.

I still haven't even started tuning the pipe (it's way long right now) I'm getting 14,200 RPMs on the ground when turning a 12x6 prop running 5% nitro and one head shim. Now that it's had about half an hour's running it will also idle reliably at around 2,100 RPMs. The temperature was about 78 deg F with moderate humidity and I'm at an altitude of 1,300 feet ASL.

The full throttle RPMs increase by around 1,000 in the air but with a shorter pipe I'm pretty certain I can squeeze another 500RPMs out of it.

The performance of this plane is noticeably better than with the piped TT61GP I was using before and *miles* better than when I had an SK90 fitted to the same airframe.

I had about six flights today without a single dead-stick and using a variety of props.

The only problem I've got now is that the 12x6 prop rips so badly it's painfully loud and the pipe is a straight-through one with a small expansion chamber around the stinger so the exhaust note is also loud.

On the first full-throttle low-pass with an 11x7 a lot of heads turned :-) This pass was started with a steep vertical dive and I estimate the plane was probably doing around 115mph -- not bad for a trainer (although it had done over 105mph with the TT61GP).

Unfortunately my mounting system for the tuned pipe (rubber bands and wire) wasn't really up to the task and the pipe started detaching itself during the last flight so I decided to hangar things until I get a chance to make a better setup.

Next week I'll tune the pipe properly and try a few more props.

But for $39/$49 (depending on when you bought it), this engine is a keeper! -- but don't go buying one, I want to get some more for myself first!

Unfortunately my video camera-man was busy with family commitments today but next time there'll be video, I promise!

Don't you love it when a gamble pays off? Nice flight report ..

I had an early 90's MDS .21, rear exhaust. Diesel. A bit heavy, almost a .40 size case, but it went like a cut snake. I foolishly swapped it.

These are engines with their idiosyncrasies, but the basic design was very sound.

I should add that this engine is *so* easy to start -- it's just like one of my TT46Pro's -- choke a couple of times, flip it quickly a couple more, hook up the glow heat and in a single bump of the prop she's away.

XJet: Thanks for doing these tests. I am really happy about what you are reporting. I was going to ask about video but you already beat me to it!

PS: Glad I bought two of these.

XJet,

What pipe are you running? What brand of prop?

I look forward to hearing more as you get more testing in on this engine.

Thanks,
Mark

As promised, I have produced some video of my MAC/MDS engine in action.

In this video it's fitted with a 11.5x6 Bolly prop (quite a thick blade section) and is running on a fuel with 5% nitro and 20% oil (the same oil used in Omega -- a castor/synth blend) and has one head-shim fitted. I'm running an old FireBall standard-heat long-reach plug too so I expect things will improve once I switch to something a little better.

I haven't tach'd the motor with this prop on but as you'll hear in the video, it's not doing too bad in the RPMs department.

After several flights with this fuel I switched to my preferred blend (5% nitro, 12% Coopers Plus-C oil) for the rest of the day and the engine ran a *lot* smoother, plus I picked up a few hundred RPMs and got quite a bit more time out of a tank.

This plane is *definitely* faster with the MAC/MDS than it was when using the piped TT61GP I blew up a few weeks back -- it is *so* much fun it should be illegal.

It's a little fussy in regards to props -- but that's almost certainly because this prop is best suited to the pipe as it's currently tuned. One thing's for sure with the 11.5x6, it has astonishing vertical performance.

I only had one problem all day and that was when the screw retaining the carby barrel broke. Fortunately my hangar/workshop is on the airfield so I just made a new one up from a cap-head screw.

And speaking of cap-head screws, the more observant of you will notice that I have replaced all the horrible slot-head screws with cap-head ones, much nicer.

By the end of the day (and a gallon of fuel later), all the covering on the fuselage was coming off so I guess I'll have to do a little airframe maintenance.

I suspect that Alberto will clear his remaining stock pretty quickly after people see this video so you'd better get in quick if you want one.

Ah ... Xjet ... you know what's wrong with that MDS?

Absolutely nothing!

I'd say that under-rated Fireball plug is putting in a fine performance as well

How is idle, and transition on your 12% Coopers oil fuel?

*Well* done.
