I just thought I would finally post about my Midwest Tri-Squire that I have completed aside from coving (Thermal Span is on the way). I was given the original 1960-something kit by a friend of mine last fall. I inventoried the kit and found nothing missing, but much of the parts were splitting from age and the plan had been attacked by insects at some point in its 40+ years in the box. I restored the plans and made copies to build from and re-kitted with hand-cut fresh balsa. I built this to the plan minus the GG contols with a few exceptions (mods for a brushless set-up, bolt-on wing, steering nose wheel, larger elevator, and the cowled nose). These pics are from during the build... I will try to get some full shots posted soon.

Nice job!
The Tri-Squire was my first proportional RC airplane in 1967.
I installed a set of strip ailerons, a Merco .35 and a Galaxy 5 radio.
Great trainer!
Brings back some great memories!!!!!

I don't mind at all... I was considering cutting out for the windows as well. Did you need to add any aditional material around them for strength?

Almost. I reversed the wing and stab scheme because I had plenty of red silk. They will be overall red silk with cream dope along the leading edges. I hope it will still look ok.

No bracing around the windows other than the framework shown on the plans (the shaded area).

Not a bad kit for $11.95. Acs_guitars, if it's not too late, you might want to turn the main landing gear around. The tapered side faces forward, unless you want it that way.

Yeah, I noticed I had it on backwards after taking the last pics.... it is just held by 2 nylon bolts so it's not an issue.

Really enjoy the Tri-Squire site and the pictures. She was my first R/C ship in 1973, built on an old card table in my bedroom, and I really liked that old girl! Had a Fox .15 RC and Monokote covering with an EK Logitrol radio. Anyone know where I can get a copy of the plans to scratch one out for old times sake? Thanks for the memory!

I can send you a set of copied plans... See the pics at the top of the thread. I have made cleaned up copies for my future use, the section missing on the fuse plan is for the horizontal stab saddle doubler. Not an issue since it is shown on the sideview above. So they are not perfect but good enough to build from. PM me with your address.

Great to see a post about this plane. I learned to fly on Tri-Squire with an OS 19 and Heatkit GD-19 blue box back in 1971. I started with 3 channel then added strip ailerons. It was covered with Monokote.

One was just sold on Ebay for $76. I would have liked to have had it for nostaglia's sake but didn't bid seriously enough on it. The pic is mine back in 1971

Nice. That one looks closer to the one I flew. I never bothered with the canopy. I wasn't much into cosmetics at the time.

I still have my Tri-Squire fuselage. The wing and stab were misplaced during a move.

I wasn't into cosmetics either. One roll of red monokote and a sheet of black trim monokote. The W B are my initials obviously. I just noticed the doubled back antenna in the pic. Thats a no no. The the guy that taught me to fly had me change it.

Thermalspan is the similar to Polyspan/Starspan covering imaterial. Polyspan/Starspan has a grain and will tear fairly easily along it; while Thermalspan is a random-oriented fiber and has no directional grain... So it is difficult to tear in any direction. As for covering weight they are both the same. You can only get Thermalspan from one place hat I know of:

Great looking "scratch" built . It sure brings back good thoughts. there were a few flying at the field i frist found in 69..Dam thats a life time ago..looking forward to seeing more pics. of it . Keep them comming. an thanks for sharing.[;)]

Hi, Acs guitar! Checked in to see how you're coming on your Tri-Squire build. What kind of electric setup are you going to use for power? BTW, I built a 4 Star 40 some time ago ( and the Mid Star 40 too) powered by a Magnum .45 and was quite happy with it. Actually preferred the Mid Star as it seemed to "groove" better. Have FUN and think Spring (had a freezing rain day yesterday and the weatherman is calling for 6-8 inches of snow......think Spring....think Spring... Happy Building!

I am using an Eflite Power 15 coupled with an Eflite Pro-40 ESC and a 4S lipo pack for power. I am still trying to decide if I want to go with miro servos or standard since weight is really no issue at all with the airframe. It will balance very well with the ESC in the nose (over the air inlet) and the battery on or slightly aft of the CG to make up for the missing "galloping ghost" RC components.
