I built a BTE Flying King and had several flights on it the first time out. This plane is basically just a big 'flying station wagon'. Works for those of us who's reflects are a bit slower than earlier years. So, next time out..all flight surfaces check out for direction...range check as usual..good to go. Take off is predicatable, gain an appreciable altitude...you know more than 2 mistakes high. Then it happens. I input right aileron, and the bird goes to the left! I immediatley, correct by giving it the opposite aileron to straighten out. I turn to the right again....here we go....left! This is now the way things are. A fellow flier runs to my side...'what are you doing?' I respond, 'Trying to keep from crashing!' I show him what's going on....his response is predictable....your controls are reversed! Why didn't you check them prior to flight?' So, if my controls are reversed, how did I preform a succesful take off? No answer. Well, I finally abandoned ailerons, and steered with the rudder. I made it back to the runway, but landed short and mashed up the fuse.(Since rebuilt). We checked the controls on the ground, guess what....that's right....they moved in the direction as they should have. So...fellow fliers, no one believes me, but I know what I did and saw the results. Please, pray tell, my plane is not cursed! I have since replaced the receiver and the crystal. Waiting for a dry day to give it another go.
Helpful responses if you please.
Tim

Wrong plane selected on your transmitter?
Good work getting it back down without ailerons!
-LeeH

Edit: No - couldn't be that - you said it checked out before & after. Sorry...

Are there large throws on any of the surfaces?
Maybe there is some weird flexing going on at "cruise speed".

I don't know that particular plane but is it a high wing with struts? - again, were the struts tight or was the wing allowed to flex. Was everything secure?

G'day Mate,
It's a thing called adverse yaw, down going aileron produces more drag, than the up aileron, so with right aileron, the plane yaws left, & visa versa.
There are a couple of ways to fix it, 1) use co-ordinated rudder, when you turn, so left aileron & some left rudder, same with right turns, that will help with your turns. 2) Differential in your ailerons, more up than down.
And 3) if you have a computer radio, aileron & rudder mix, saves you doing the co-ordinated rudder.

What alan0899 suggests is a good posibility. I suggest you pay close attention to that. Sometimes my 71" J3-Cub behaves the same way. As a result I always add rudder when I use the ailerons. I also adjusted the aileron servo arm so that the aileron moves less in the down direction than in the up direction.

that all could be true.......however he said he had several flights the first time out without a problem. the question is what changed from the first day of flights to the next time out.....wrong plane selected on transmitter is a possiblity but he took off with out a problem.........unless that takeoff was straight ahead with out any aileron inputs. pretty strange!

On my J3-Cub the problem shows up at higher throttle settings.

Well than is everythign was ok before and after than it has to be somthign with the way the plane was that day advers yaw maybe you ahd a fast airspeed (you change the prop?)

Or could it be possible that the wing incidence changed? maybe you had your ail wire pinched between then wing/fuse that changed its angle of attack

Sometimes a plane can experience "control reversal" at higher speeds or under larger loads with a wing that is not strong when twisted. Sometimes larger slow flying planes can have this problem because they have a broad chord, are lightly built, and have cambered wings which have negetive pitching moments.

When the aileron lowers, it can cause enough lift in the aft part of the wing that the whole trailing edge lifts and twists the wing, thus reducing its AOA. Of course if the AOA is reduced enough it causes a negetive result, and you get what appears to be control reversal.

Because it was fine at takeoff speeds but happened while cruising this might be a suspect. Test for twist flexibility in the wings with someone's help.

Mr. mmiller1, a happy man with an obsession for planes. Thinks he's on his way out to the feild for another great weekend of flying with freinds. But when he arrives, he arrives in the Twilight Zone.
