The winter months of not flying can be brutal! All my first flights of the year, I get a little rusty and my legs shake a little. But it all always comes back to me after the second flight. All my other planes are Hot Rods, and my Fokker Dr1, well... I was told it's in a class all it's own. (Haven't flown it yet) I will always turn to my Fokker DVII when I want a nice simple flight and just want to take it easy, and enjoy the view of the plane in flight. ( I still haven't run into a Hanger 9 Camel yet, I'll try to behave when I do. )

So far the weather here in Upstate NY, has been very windy and very wet. Every weekend I've been going to my Club and been giving other members the ground conditions. Looks like with all this rain the Club won't be ready for another 2 weeks. I still haven't flown yet this year, so I'll continue flying my G4.5 Flight Sim, hanging out here at RCU and building planes until then.

I keep flying all winter. Seaplanes and ski planes off snow, small stuff off a paved schoolyard and one of my clubs has 2 monthly indoor flys for rubber and micro, so I am not rusty. And Pete, if you make it to Rhinebeck, you may come up against my H 9 Camel with Snoopy in the cockpit. LOL

Now if you just fly your DVII and the Camel at the same time you'd have a real show! See you at Rhinebeck!

I should get in my maiden flight of my 1/5 scale Jasta 7 Fokker DR1 before then. My plane will surely stick out in the crowd, so if you see a tall toothless ugly stick guy next to it you will know who I am.

So other words, you're on!

It's a very long haul for me so I would need to rent a van for my planes. I'll PM you my number and we'll talk how we are going to do this so we don't have any accidents. I'm not sure if we could share the same pit so we can communicate what you or I are about to do so we don't crash into each other of fly too close. I don't want to buy you another airplane because I did something stupid. My wife got excited when I read out loud your Post.

I'll bring my Fokker DVII, but screw that! My Dr1 and his Camel would be the ultimate show stopper. But if it get's a little windy my Fokker DVII will have to do. ( I can handle it in 7mph wind gusts with some or little issue) My Dr1 hates any cross wind, and if there is, I'd have to take off and land directly in the wind. If I fight it, my DR1 will dig a wing and ground loop- and or just nose over if I'm just that lucky enough.

I'll be flying my Dr1 about one hour before the sun starts to go down when winds usually dies off, or early morning. Now if it's not windy at all then she will have more than just a few flights. The reason why I'm like this is because my Fokker DR1 is not easily replaceable and I've done so much work on it, so I have to be careful.

I have just finished my H9 Fokker DVII and put a SAITO 82 in it. I haven't flown it yet and wonder about the CG. I had to put in alot of lead in the front to make it more or less on the CG that the instructions suggests. I didn't use the lead box, but instead put the receiver battery on that position and glued all the lead as far in the front I could. It seems like you can put in " a ton" of lead without affecting the CG much since it's so tail heavy. I have standard servos everythere and a light receiver so nothing is heavy in the fuselage. Is it ok if the CG is behind the suggested position or is it better to put in alot of lead so it maybe get's abit front heavy and then remove some? I guess it's easier to fly if it's front heavy instead of tail heavy anyway.

I also used the suggested 90 degree turn for the SAITO 82 to make the muffler go out at the bottom, but I get no clearence between the muffler and the fuselage so it's very tight. I wonder if that might be a problem then it comes to heat and vibrations, but I can't see how it can be fit inside there so that I can get more room around it.

Sam, better to be a little nose heavy to be sure for the maiden. Remember, a nose heavy plane flies badly. A tail heavy plane flies once.

I'll tell you a short story. I have the Sopwith as well as the D 7. When I went balance the Camel, it hung just barely tail down, and I thought it was OK. Just for laughs, I laid the ONE POUND lead block on the cowl, expecting the plane to fall forward. Instead, it just moved slightly into a more level attitude. I was shocked, but added the weight and flew it with a heavy hub on the nose. It flew well, so I decided to try it without the heavy hub, and it was squirrely. So be warned.

Finished the d7. I am trying to balance it at 3 5/8" . My question is I normally use a torpedo level on the horizontal stab but it looks way nose down when the stab is level. When the fuse looks level the stab and wings angle down from front to back. Is it built in incindence I would like to maiden it this weekend. Thanks for the help, Bill

Bill
Here's how mine balanced; it took a few ounces on the firewall to get it there, but I can't remember how many at htis point. Wasn't much tho.. Set up as stock w/ no mods, so whatever you've got after assembly is the way it's supposed to be. It flies great.
Hope this helps.

Bill,

I put my bubble level on the flat area on the cowl near the dummy engine.

Thanks so much for the help !!! I wasn't sure. Mine has the 82 I have almost a pound I would guess in the weight box and the fuse looks level. I will set fuse level and give her a go tomorrow. I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks again, Bill

Is the CG in the manual correct? Just want to make sure since I know from experience that the CG listed in manuals aren't always the best.

How is this plane on take off? I'm using the Saito 82 in it and wonder if I have to gently get up in speed or if I could go full throttle directly and take off in a few meters or what to think about?

Mine flies fine at the recommended CG. As for the takeoff, every plane and even every takeoff are different. ANY taildragger can be squirrely on the ground, especially at low speed/high power conditions. What I have found works for me is to hold the tail hard down during the early part of the take off roll. This serves to use the tailwheel or skid as an anchor to hold the tail where you want it-namely, BEHIND the motor. As your forward speed and engine speed come up (yes, I throttle up gradually), the rudder becomes more effective and able to overcome the engine torque. Be sure you release the up elevator before your model achieves flying speed, or you will find yourself in a vertical attitude very close to the ground, which is not a good place to be-don't ask me how I know.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Well I maidened it! The take off was terreible! squirrely as all get out !!! took 3 attempts to get her airborn, scary slow climb out !! I thought she was gonna stall and fall. Once airborn it's a great easy flyer. I went with an .82 and 14-6 wood scimitar prop I can only get 8500 rpm out of it I think I might try a 13-6 and if it still flys scary slow and I don't crash it. I think I'll hang'er up and look at it.

Congrats on the successful maiden! An 82 four stroke should fly that plane with authority. Get some practice in and bring it to the Jamboree at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in September!

Just to let everyone know it looks like I'm only going to do only local shows this year and won't be making it to Rhinebeck. Money just got tight and I have a 3 year old to take care of and I lost my job last year. If things look any better money wise I'll try to make next years event. In the meantime I'll try and keep my Fokker DR1 in one piece.

Sorry to hear it, Pete! I wish you the best and hope things get better soon. I just got home from 5 days at Warbirds over Delaware. I'll be posting highlights on you tube within the next few days or sooner. Flew my Sopwith Camel and my D 7 for a total of 5 flights including in a 18 plane and a 22 plane scramble. Super good show, as usual.

Thanks,

More bad news here- Hanger 9 just discontinued the Camel and Fokker DVII. I'm pissed because I know they made a killing in profits on both of these planes. So all who have these planes you better take care of them like I baby my GP Fokker DR1. Parts will become impossible after a while.

I like to show people I'm not perfect. Matter in fact I don't like people who think they are. Can a guy make a small error in spelling or is it the end of the world for you if one does?

Not offended, just annoyed.

The topic is about the loss of some great planes from Hanger 9, not ones spelling. Right?

Anyhow, something tells me that Hanger 9 isn't going to come out with anything special for a while. Maybe it's better to build kits now, it seems the kits seem to last longer on the market than ARF aircraft. For instance, I don't think BUSA has discontinued any of their kits for a very, very long time.

Thats not good I was going to get one of these. I guess I will have to build the BUSA 1/4 scale one now.
