I fly Dynamic soaring. We go over 300 MPH, the world record is 313 MPH. The planes we fly are amazing, all composite high wing loading (mine is at 32 ounces per square foot!) molded gliders that experience over 80 continuous G's for hours at a time.

The Opus MC3 is a 2 meter glider that has gone 308 I believe. I've taken this glider to 297. Unfortunately this plane skipped across a rock, hitting the underside of the wing. While the damage doesn't look all that bad, the spar cap on the bottom is snapped. Basically ruining the wing for any more high speed action.

I worked for a couple years at a full scale glider port, where I learned a lot about composites repair, along with molding and bagging my own models. I learned about doing invisible repairs. I am repairing this Opus to where it should be good for fast DS again.

The carbon cap is broken, to be strong it needs a very specific repair.

I scarfed into the cap, deepest at the crack, then graduating in steps up to the skin. I will insert carbon tow into each level, ending with the longest to flush with the top of the wing. When I'm done, it should be close to as strong as it was.

I'll post more pics as the repair continues

Mike:
I'll be following this closely since I have a repair I need to do and never done this type of work before.
My first question, can you explain in a little more detail how you "scarfed" down thru the cracks?
In my case I'll be fixing a series of fiber glass cracks in a fuse.
Thanks, Dan.

Sounds like pylon racing on a mountain top. Forty years ago, I though I would like pylon racing but I never figured out a way to fly from under my truck. what do you hide behind while flying your cannon shells?

LOL,, you don't fly pylon from under your truck! You just wear your little hard hat, run around in a circle with a guy following and screaming at you.
