I'm confused about charging lipos. How many times can I straight charge (not through the balance connector but through the JST or Deans connector) before I should balance charge the pack. Up till now, I've done nothing but charge through
the balance charge jack, but I recently got an Apache 2020 smart charger. Well, this charger has no provisions for balance
charging, all it does is straight charge through JST connections at selectable rates of 110maH, 250maH, 500maH, 750mah,
or 1200maH.
So what's the deal? Do you just balance charge every few cycles or what? This charger can't even balance charge. The $10.00 Esky charger balance charges every time- no other option.

Thanks for the help,
Don

Don-

When Lipo's first came out, no one was balancing them.. Then we realized that it helps keep the pack in "tip top shape" to balance them..

I tend to balance everytime or every other time when charging.. It depends on what charger I am using... Most of my chargers will balance, however all of them won't.. So I try and rotate around..

You could "straight" charge a pack for its entire life and never balance it, however, it will probably last longer if you balance it..

Jeff,
What you said makes alot of sense. Now that I've learned how to check the voltage of each cell using the digital voltmeter
and the balancing connector, I monitor the individual cells and make sure they are within .1 volts of each other in a pack.
If not, they go on the balance charger.

I am balancing when I charge .I also bought a few extra batteries and rotate them.as silly it sounds I have developed a simple chart system to keep track of the #of times charged and the now use a timer for each flight I found I dont run my batteries down/at first it seemed like a lot of fuss with electrics but its becoming second nature and you use commonsense and your fine.
