Read above for my *** IMPORTANT UPDATE **** message.

Also still confused. So you no longer own the Tazer 12t ESC the store bought it back from you??? You now only own one Traxxas XL-10 ESC?

I'll be going to Nitro in the summer for sure, but I couldn't let me lil' dynamite truck just die. Since the motors (Venom Fireballs) are only $21 CAD, I thought I wold give it a try. Maybe another reason why I've tried a few more setups is because I got a good deal. When the first retro series motor melted, they store gave me a store credit and only charged me $79 for the $99 Traxxas XL-10 ESC. If I didn't get the credit and if I wasn't able to get the store to sell my Tazer for me, I probably would have given up too a bit earlier.

The guys at SkyCraft in Burlington are good to me! I would recommend them to anyone.

Tokenring: I am a little confused. So you have had no problems using the 17t Double Venom Fireball motor with the Traxxas XL-10 ESC or with the Tazer 12t ESC? I need to know if that motor works with the Tazer 12t ESC, or do I need to buy the Traxxas XL-10 ESC too?

Also, do you know the big difference between the Traxxas XL-5 ESC vs the XL-10 ESC? It shows the XL-5 can go from 4-8 Cells max, and the XL-10 can only use 7 cells max? What gives?

PS - Every online hobby shop seems to be sold out of that Venom Fireball motor!!!! The guy said after Christmas they have had trouble getting their shipment from the company hrmmm....

******** IMPORTANT UPDATE *********** Are you using the stock heat sink or any type of heat sink on these motors? The stock heat sink wouldn't fit any longer when i switched engines and I havn't been using it. Maybe this might have something to do with why the motors heating up and dying?

yeah I've used the 17d Venom Fireball with the Tazer 12T also, and it worked with no problems but the other guys didn't have the same luck. Now that I don't understand because we had the same setup. I will add the new entry in bold

7.2v 4600 nimh, stock 540, Tazer 12T ESC, 64/17 (worked great, but lacked performance)

7.2v 4600 nimh, 13t retro series, Tazer 12T ESC, 64/17 (worked amazing for 2 - 4 runs and back melted off)
7.2v 4600 nimh, 13d Venom Fireball, Tazer 12T ESC, 64/17 (worked amazing for 1 day and back melted off)

7.2v 4600 nimh, 17d Venom Fireball, Tazer 12T ESC, 64/17 (worked good, but OTHER users haven't had success)

8.4v 4200 nimh, 17d Venom Fireball, Traxxas XL-10 ESC, 64/17 (works awesome with no problems for 1 week now)

Does this make sense now? Let me know

Got cha! Makes sense now! You left out that one entry in your last post!

What other users had this setup and it didn't work for them? Can you link me to those threads? Yes I have used the search function and got so many replies it was hard to narrow them down.

What do you think about me just buying a new Traxxas Rustler? I am so tired of problems just want it to work!!! Keep me updated on how that Traxxas XL-10 ESC is running for you. Is that one better than the XL-5 ESC?

Hey King!!!

Sorry about forgetting that one entry and I'm glad you gave feedback on how now it makes sense. Thanks for that. I was looking back at my own entries and I was like 'this is kinda confusing and messy'

I haven't used the XL-5 so I don't know how to compare. But I think the 10 in XL-10 represents the turns it can handle, so I guess the other ESC can take as low as a 5 turn motor. Not sure though. How much is that traxxas you are you looking at getting and how much have you spent on the ExceedRC car so far?

yeah... I don't have the Tazer 12T anymore, but the store didn't buy it back, they offered something called consignment. This means they take it back, sell it, and take a cut. Pretty cool idea! It's DustyDoug that has also had the problems with the Tazer 12T which is on the first page of this thread... I think. Let me know

well I bought the truck for $100, then the motor and ESC both died, bought the 19t dragon motor and the Tazer 12t esc for $80. Then I paid to have deans plugs put on so almost $200 dollars total so far. Now I'm looking at buying a NEW ESC and NEW motor so tack on another $80-100 bucks making it around $300 total.

The Traxxas rustler is like $172 at towerhobbies. Plus they are running a special if you spend $199 you get $25 back. That is what I am looking at doing buying the truck and Piranha charger for like $50.

Just wish I would have waited and got the Traxxas XL-5 or XL-10 ESC from the start instead of the Tazer it is a $50 motor killer lol :>

I put the deans connections on too. I've spent the same though, but I was lucky. After I did the initial purchase of the truck, I got $200 worth of gift certificates at the local hobby store. Maybe get yours going and sell it and then get the rustler. is it RTR?

lol ok this traxxas ESC is like $80-100 bucks? That definately makes me want to switch to nitro. I've spent quite a bit more than token ring though: truck: $100 2x Tazer 12t's(fried one driving through water puddle) $80(40ea), 3 radio shack 7.2v 3400 batteries $60(20ea), RadioShack quick charger: $50, trinity speed gems 12t double modified motor: $30, Traxxas 19t motor: $20, body clips: $3, 3x 22,24,26t pinions(wrong pitch) $3ea, Small allen wrench set: $30... yah I think thats it. If you include shipping on all of it, tack on another $50.

Right now I have the Tazer 12t ESC, which I'm not sure is fully operational anymore, trinity speed gems 12t motor(installed, overheats ESC), and a stock motor thats too weak to have any real fun. Truck works right now but will probably blow up if I try to run it anymore. I will do 1 more motor swap with this elusive venom fireball motor but if somethign fries again thats it, buying a nitro truck! I really hoped electric was going to be easier than nitro but really it's vise versa. At least I know how to take care of and fix nitro's...

BTW how the hell do you even remove the big gear that looks like it's permanently attached to the rear axle leading into transmission? HAH

I still think it's a gearing issue, we are all having the same trouble with similar in function yet different components, melting motors...

I think we need a bigger driven gear like a 67 or 68, than we would be able to taylor the gearing with the drive gear.

Red Cat, Exceed support, how about a lower driven gear.

Well we both have two things in common. The gearing on the Exceed Truck, and we are both using Tazer 12t ESC's. Now me personally, I think it is the ESC causing the problems.

Tokenring was smart and got rid of his Tazer 12t ESC, and got a Traxxas and he hasn't had any problems sense. Now I don't know how many runs he put in with that Venom Fireball motor and the Tazer ESC, but I suspect that it wasn't a lot and if he continued with that ESC it would have fried that motor as well.

This is so frustrating we are all in the same boat. I want to just get a Traxxas Rustler as I have heard nothing but good things about this model.

P.S. - O and I might just buy a new Traxxas XL-5 ESC and a new motor to replace the POS Tazer 12t ESC that can't even handle 8.4v

I forgot to mention... and it might not be worth anything, but the guys at the local hobby store said the same thing. They think it was the ESC also. I told them about my situation obviously and what has happened to the rest of us... and they're like "yep, those are good motors you all had, with that one ESC... hmmmm. It must be the ESC"

I'm just waiting for that last bit of snow to go away so I can do that exact thing. I have the underground parking like in my first video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2m-d4X8xN-A

but the lighting is not as good. If the snow takes its time (x) then I'll do it before the weekend for sure!!!
