I have two servos with matchbox on each wing.
Instructions for Matchboxes say, "Keep the matchbox as close to the reciever as possible" and they give you a lead of about 2". How do you all do the wiring connections for removable wings? Do you unplug from the receiver or matchbox each time, or do you have a different setup. How many connections are feasable in the line.
I have a connection from servo (1) to a 30" extention on one servo and 24" extension on the second servo. The extensions runs thru the fuse to the matchbox (2). Then from matchbox (3) to the receiver (4). With this configuration, I would have to unplug from the matchbox each time I remove the wing.
I was thinking of mounting the matchbox in the wing root, run a short extension thru the fuse, and then another extension off the first, to go to the receiver. This would add a fifth connection in the line.

Just wondering how everyone else does it. Pics would be nice.

Thanks

Just unplug the 2 and plug them back in when you put your wing on, I do that with 3 per wing, and 2 per elevator half, I have to pull all 4 to haul the plane. So I have 3 wires coming out of each wing, plugging in to a match box each wing, then where the extinctions running to the tail 4 of them have to be plugged in to the elevator halves which have 2 in each of them.
It is easier to mount your match boxes where you can see and get to them if you have to make any adjustments so I have all 4 (elevators, rudder and both wings) of mine beside the receiver if I am not running a Smart-Fly panel in my planes.

Thanks for the info, G-man.
I was just wondering if there was an easier way. Seems there would be alot of wear and tear on the plugs, working them all the time.

By the way, I am using (2) DS8711's on each wing, (1) on each elevator half and (2) DS8611A's on rudder with a JR X9303 2.4 radio. I am still considering the use of a power expander.

This is a mid 90's composite plane and at 53#, is pushing the AMA weight limit but I will not be doing any 3D with it.

I believe the issue with trying to keep the matchbox close to the rx has to do with the current limitations of the single lead from the rx to the matchbox. First those small connectors are only good for about 4 amps continous current flow with a spike capability of about twice that amount, depending on whose test numbers you choose to believe but that's pretty much the consensous. Then if you use long extensions of insufficient wire size, that creates a problem as well since those can cause higher resistance to current flow as they get longer.

So if you've got two big servos in each wing, it would be possible to overload the single feed to the matchbox.

Now all that being said, the servos I use for the ailerons on my Edge are rated at less than two amps each so I just got a set of 20 AWG wire size extensions from the rx for the ailerons. The matchboxes are mounted in the wing root and have 20 AWG extensions which I plug into the extensions from the rx when I assemble the model so there's only one lead per side to connect.

Works fine unless you get three servos per side, or two big servos. Then you've either got to do as has been suggested, or run a separate power lead to the matchbox.

Glider guiders with multiple servo wings seem to be using 4 or 6 pin connectors, so that they do not have to play with lots of loose wires when setting up:

In this case I was referring to an electronic device used for matching the centers and endpoints of multiple servos and used the JR name for them. Kind of like everyone calls an adjustable end wrench a "Cresent" wrench even though they might be made by other manufacturers.

Here's a link to the JR item;

Futaba also makes one they call an MSA-10 servo synchronizer and it does the same thing;

I'm not sure if other manufacturers make something exactly like them or not, but there are also electronic boards used in the big stuff like the 40 percenters and some 35's which can do the same thing and are generally referred to as equalizers or power expanders which may or may not have that feature.
