Status: offline 		Just had a friend give me a Power Mac 310 chainsaw. What size is the engine on this saw? Are there any threads on converting this engine?

Status: offline 		After doing some searching, I have found that it is a 34.4cc. Was discontinued in 1993. Has a front mounted carb and a rear mounted muffler. Sounds like a good conversion for a narrow fuse airplane. Has anyone done one of these? If so, what kind of power could I expect.

Status: offline 		I have one of these as a chainsaw.
Power is reasonable and the saw still runs well after all of these years.

The older Macs had forged cranks and pistons when no one else did.
I'm not sure if this one does.

Status: offline 		Took it apart this evening at work. It has a really large Zama carb. A split crankcase. The carb is mounted on the front to a roundish rubber type intake manifold. The carb does not have a pump hole but seemed to have a hose that ran from the manifold to the carb. It was missing. might be why the saw wouldn't run. The cylinder head and the upper crankcase are one casting. When I pulled the crankcase apart, I found that the piston and cylinder look almost brand new. The piston has two rings on it but they are not pinned. The muffler was tiny. The only thing that would need to be cut off is the part where the chain bar and the chain oiler mounts. There was also a hole from the oiler into the crankcase. I would assume that this hole would need to be closed off somehow.

This looks like it would make a really good conversion engine. I left it a work to show to my buddies tommorrow. Will bring it home then and take some pics. I am thinking this might be good for a GP Tiger Moth that I might acquire or it might be a better engine for my Dynaflite SE5 than the Ryobi 31cc that I have already converted. If powerful enough it might even work on a light narrow cowl warbird. So far I am pretty excited about this one. Any suggestions on how to proceed on the conversion?

Status: offline 		Great Planes Tiger Moth. 71" wingspan. Arf is no longer in production. Plane has been passed around a bit in my club. Hope to make it my turn for a while. It has a 4 stroke glow on it now. I want to put gas on it.

Status: offline 		I have a 25cc Toro on mine.

According to a post I just found it weighs 3 pounds 7 ounces
and balances with no added weight, I just checked.

The battery and reciever are in back of the servo tray.
I made an access door behind the engine on the bottom of the fuse. so I
could install all of the EI stuff.
I havent flown it with the Toro yet but it balances the same as when it had a 100 Saito and balast.

Status: offline 		Wow Ralph. That looks like a good installation. I was worried that one of the side carb side muffler engines would be too wide. I have a Homelite 25 in a box ready for conversion. How much if any does your engine stick out the side of the cowl. I also have a Ryobi ready to go into an airplane now. What do you think about the Ryobi for this application?

Status: offline 		1/4 inch of the muffler sticks out and 1/2 inch of the carb. excluding the V stank.
The nose of the plane is tapered or else it would be a much better fit.

Weight will be your biggest concern.
The Ryobi is narrow, but I believe the Homelite is lighter.
There is plenty of lift on this bird so it may not matter all that much

I think it looks pretty good with out the cowl.
But there are those who think it must all fit perfectly.

Some where I posted a picture of the plumbing on the engine, did you see it?
I could not find it on my computer.

Maybe I'll stop working on my Mr. Mulligan and go fly this afternoon.
Crash pictures soon to follow. I hate maiden flights.

I would appreciate you letting me know how your Moth does on the Homie. When I get mine, I'll check to see if the Ryobi will fit or if your Homie does well, I may put it on there and save the Mac for a warbird. I had converted the Ryobi to put on a Dynaflite SE5a that I am building. Although the Ryobi is narrow it is also Loooooong. May be too long for the Moth. I already know that I will have to move the firewall back on the SE5 to make it fit. But since I haven't built the fuse yet that is no problem. Also it will move the weight back a little. Either way, both bipes should have plenty enough wing area for a Ryobi.

Status: offline 		I have a Ryobi on the Nitro Planes 78" span Tiger Moth. It flies quite well, but I sometimes wish for more power. (Take that in context after having read my motto below. It definitely has more than "scale" power.) I think a Ryobi would do very well on the somewhat smaller Great Planes Tiger Moth.

Status: offline 		Ya know, I had one of those. I figured the carb was going to end up too close to the prop, so I gave it to my brother to use for parts.

It will be interesting to see how it works for you.

But I couldn't tell how close the Carb. was.


Perhaps EI and run it backwards with the carb in back.

Status: offline 		Possible, assuming the muffler wouldn't block enough cooling air to be a problem. Perhaps just a header pipe running back to a canister muffler.

Status: offline 		The carb sticks out just a little past the flywheel. I think it would be ok with a prop hub on it.

AV8tor,

Do you have any pics of the Ryobi mounted on your Tiger Moth? I would like to see them if I could.

Status: offline 		Hey Ralph/av8 I have a 88" tiger moth. The kit is made by Duncan Hutson The planes call for A 120 4 stroke or A 90/120 2 stroke. I have a 28 cc mac motor that I converted and I plan on running it on glow/gas do you think it would be big enough for my moth??? I think it weighs about 4 pounds? (the engine). The planes say the plane will weigh about 15 pounds but doesn't say if that is with or with out engine? I don't have my plane finished yet it is about to the covering stage.

Status: offline 		That's a pretty big biplane. It will fly, but might be a bit underpowered. It would fly it in a scale manner I would say. (Might have to dive to pick up airspeed for a loop, etc.)

Status: offline 		I flew mine for the first time a couple of days ago, by accident.
I was doing some ground work when it simply took off at 1/2 throttle.
I run a 25cc Toro and a 15 x 8 prop. The engine is still breaking in and turns about 7700 to 7800 rpm.

The plane was tail heavy and I managed to land it on the runway.
But it was an intence 60 seconds. I hate maiden flights.

So yes it should fly with the Mac, but you may want a little more power.
There is a 32cc cylinder that fits the 28cc engine if need be.
Plus a Bowman ring will make a big difference too.

The first thing I would do is check the ring gap. My 28 Mac has a huge ring gap.
And will run much better once I put a new ring in it, even the $5.00 stock one.
I just don't have a use for the engine right now.

Keep us posted and pictures are always nice.

Status: offline 		Well maybe I should hold out for A little more engine I don't want it to be under powered.I have heard about putting the 32cc piston and clyinder on it.I will look for one.I have a lot of work to do on the plane yet so I do have time.Where do you get the bowman ring in case I stay with the 28cc or also if I get the 32cc I would change out the ring in that also? I'm a newbe to this so I have everything to learn and I thank you guys for the help.

Status: offline 		I've got a few of those, never got to converting one (did get one semi stripped down to the process), their downside is they are roller bearing engines, I was going to put one in a boat but have a lot of unfinished/barely started projects...
