I have view several build threads where various builders have constructed some pretty amazing hardware from Carbon rods, tubes and flat stock. I guess it is the equalivant to working with steel? Can you get away with Hi-speed drills and cutting tools or in the lonf haul do you need carbide or diamond tooling? My immediate need is the proper epoxy to use on my telescoping wing tubes. They step down from .840" OD, .750" OD and .543 OD, having about .022 clearance all around. I have designed a wing jib for a Stinson SR-9 and have incorpated a centering fixture in it to fabricate the carbon wing spars. For what ever reason the manufacture of the tubing will not make a recommendation, he way of handling it is to not answer the several emails I have sent him, go figure. Buy my tubes for several hundred dollars, BYE, your on your own!
Thanks, Charlie

Charlie,

Carbon cuts easily but it will wear out tools quickly and the trick is to cut it without tearing out any fibers. For cutting straight cuts, the $15 diamond wheel dremel tool available at Home Depot or Lowe's cuts it like butter and clean as a whistle. For drilling, regular drill bits work fine but they will dull quickly. With drilling, if you take the time to make a small pilot hole and then bore a shallow bit with a countersink or larger bit from each side, you can resist most of the minor tear-out that might occur. Watch the dust - it's not healthy.

I think it is worth the effort and expence of the tooling, to be able to fasbricate more true scale parts, as they can be smaller. I have drilled and tapped Fiberglass parts, so imagen that will work also, just need high quality tappes and drill, and use lots of bees wax!
Thanks for the help! Charlie

It is a resonable lubricant! Start your drilling or tapping process and swipe the tool over the bees wax block and continue the process!
