It should balance OK, 4.9lb or thereabouts without mounts is kinda heavy though. May take a time or two messing with battery placement etc. to get CG.

A 20x10 will do nicely for sport flying, if you want to 3D it - try a 21x8.

From all reports it's a very reliable engine if a wee bit heavy.

My .02

Cheers,

Andrew.

Do uou know what a different 43-45 size electronic ignition motor with battery would weigh?

If you are looking for a good light small engine consider the BME 58 Xtreme.

It's very very light (2.7lbs).
Has way more power than a DA/DL50.
Is extremely small so you dont have to destroy cowls to fit it.

Will fly the Extra effortlessly and will take you a few airframe sizes up with more power than the other guys.

Check it out. http://www.bmeengine.com/engines.htm

The reason I suggest this is to help you avoid a mistake I made. I purchased the Brillelli 46GT. Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful engine. But it just doesn't have the same power as a 50cc. So when it comes time to shop for airframes I am much more limited than someone with say a DA-50....

So with the 58 being so small and light it will move through many more plane size options than any 43-46-50.

Cheers,

Andrew.

I feel the need to jump in here and share my 2 cents.

I understand what diviatix is trying to say about being limited down the road. However I would in no way recommend a 58cc engine in this plane. You are seriously running the risk of blowing this thing apart. With a 45cc and a 20x8 this thing screams through the sky. Upgrading to a 58cc with a 22x8 or 23x8 on a plane this size in rediculous.

There is a growing trend I see where all people look at is the weight of the engine and think they can throw it into anything because it weighs the same as a smaller engine.

The plane comes out less than 14 pounds, you could fly this with awesome performance on a 26cc and a pipe. This plane isn't designed for a 58cc engine.

Yes you can say that you can always throttle back. However for many this will be their first gas plane and I don't know many who don't get lost in the excitement at this level and forget to throttle back. Doing that on a plane designed around a 35-45cc engine will surely end with flutter or just plain ripping the wings off the thing.

If you out grow it, sell it and upgrade then. This plane has very thin wings, it doesn't take much to get it ripping through the sky.

Guess I can't argue with Jake. He is certainly more experienced than I in every aspect of RC. Taking his opinions over mine is definitely the best bet.

I would simply limited my throttle endpoints to keep it at a reasonable max RPM. (Then again I'm a cheapo I like to buy once use many)

Cheers,

Andrew.

I completely understand what you are saying about buying once.. this is just a tough size to do that with.

Here is a post from the 300 thread. I wasn't at full throttle very often and you can see this thing is moving.

Hey guys,

There have been several requests for some video. I recently finished up the review on this plane and had some video left over which I didn't use in the review videos. I just through it together and uploaded it so you guys could see it.

Jake where is the review? I'd like to read it!

BTW in yer video I see the plane was wanting to tip stall during harriers. was this due to wind or is the 300 not so stable during harriers?

Nice slow rolls!!

The review hasn't gone online yet, I will post a link when it does.

As for the harriers, in personal expierence I haven't found many that are rock solid in harriers unless you get up to 50cc and above where they have some mass. This being said, I did not spend a lot of time harriering it around due to engine issues. I think every day was windy except for one.

I don't think you are going to get them perfectly smooth, however with some work I am sure you can get them a lot better than I showed.

Here is what I said in my review.

"Upright harriers definitely have a bit of wing rock and I don't expect that to change even on a calm day. It just didn't want to settle in. I would say if you spend some time with the plane you should be able to minimize it though."

I really didn't get to 3D this plane as much as I would have liked, a dead stick in a hover destroyed it for me I will be picking up another one though.

INverted it was fine though.

I run the 260 with a Brillelli 46 and experienced the same behavior in high alpha. Using a 10-15% spoiler mix on my 10c was the difference between night and day on harriers. (makes walls more fun too if you link the mix to elevator stick movement)

Cheers,

Andrew.

Thanks, Jake!

diviatix, what are the flat spins like? inverted and upright. oh and an elevator? (inverted and upright...) When it flat spins can you hold it quite flat? Does it spin tightly around the cg or more of a circle?

btw, I'm just itchin to slap mine together. I now have everything. My problem is that I have to switch out the red covering for something else as I have big problems seeing red. I had to do this with my ultimate 160...

I have a inverted flat spin in the 1 of the review videos. It flattened out nicely for me and spins around the CG. I didn't do it from a blender to really wind it up, but I liked what I saw with a gentle entry.

Im a real flatspin fan twn. Ya they are pretty nice. I generally do uprights from a stall, rotates around CG, needs almost full opposite aileron to stay flat for me. Really tight though. Inverted flats from a blender work really well too, needs less aileron correction than uprights.

On the elevator I find I need to finesse the throttle to keep a good attitude, a little more work than some.... End result is good once you find the sweet spot though.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Just finished my 260 Extra with a Zenoah 45. I had to add about 9 oz on the plane to make it balanced. Three oz on the servo tray by the rudder servo and 6 oz under the stabs. My plane comes in at 16 pounds. Do you think that is to heavy or not? I plan to maidden her this weekend if the weather cooperates.

That is definately heavy for this plane. Most are coming in closer to 14 pounds. That being said I can remember one of my first gas planes was a Great Planes 78" Extra that weighed over 16 pounds and had less wing area. It flew just fine, but you couldn't slow it down and float in to land. It just landed a little quick than most.

A couple things you can do:

1. Get a fiberglass or CF Spinner with a lightened backplate
2. Remove the dead weight. Cut the covering on the bottom and build a tray so you can move your batteries back to the tail. You will barely notice the patch job on the covering.
3. The further back the weight is the better, attach some to the rudder.
4. If you can, move your engine in a little closer, even 1/4" helps.

I think the plane will fly ok, but I think if you do some steps to get rid of the dead weight and get it closer to 15 pounds you will be happier.

Thanks for the reply. I Have been thinking of building a battery compartment on the rear of the plane. I dont know if I should try doing it before taking her on her maiden flight. I am also afraid that the extra weight may be to much for the landing gear as well as the landing block. I have also noticed that the wheel axals are a little whimpie for this size plane.Do you think is better to change them for some stronger ones?

I kinda slammed mine in the asphalt a while ago, landing gear and axles held up just fine. The wing hitting a street sign was a bigger problem for me though.

Now people, we need more VIDEO! To this day, I'm still the only one with a video of the 260 on Youtube that I know of. I sure would like to see some video of someone else out there. My video kinda stinks too, no one was there to help me out.

The landing gear and axles will be fine.

I had 2 incidences where I heavily "tested" the gear on dead sticks from rolling harriers where I had to point it at he ground and flair at the extreme end to pancake a landing. It will bend out but the plate is more than strong enough.

At 16 pounds it will fly no problem, I just think you will get more enjoyment out of the plane by lightening it.

Since you aren't going flying until the weekend you have 3 nights to make a battery mount - get crackin!

I love this plane. It does everything better than all my other planes. Of course, all my other planes are 60 sized or less...

Here's today's flight, sorry I don't have a professional video taker.

Man this thing is built tail heavy. Where are all of you balancing the 260 and 300? I had to mount my engine with washers at 6.4" from the firewall AND place my radio battery against the back side of the firewall to get my cg to 3.7" from the leading edges of the wing tips. That is .7" AFT of the manual's recomended 3". I'm a little nervous to fly that tail heavy and I don't really want to add weight or move my engine any further...

That's probably how mine would have balanced if I didn't have a back-up receiver battery and a smoke pump battery - everything is mounted under the trays and I'm still 1/4" behind recommended. It flies nice though but you have to keep the throttle a tad above idle on landing so the front wheels hit before the tail!

What motor do you have on? Mine is the DL-50 (which, btw, I love).

Found a pic, I may have already posted this somewhere

I have, since I took/made this picture, moved the smoke pump battery to the side of the pump.

I have the spe43 in mine. I'll take some photos and post them. I guess I'll have to add another washer to the engine mounts. I'll feel safe at 1/4" aft but not 3/4" aft... at least not yet... One more washer should push the engine forward enough to get the cg to 3.25"

I have a dl50 in my ultimate 160. I LOVE the power! She is a rocket!

My flying buddy, Stacy (Conacher) took the photo for me and his buddy just HAD to be in the photo! lol

Seems like I did fly mine at 1/2" behind but second flight it stalled and hit stop sign - that's when I moved things around and got it to 1/4" behind which I am comfortable with. Luckily the stop sign didn't kill it.

Ya, don't fly it 3/4" behind - landing could be scary.

I wonder what the difference on engine weight is between our two motors? Apparently enough to make it tail heavy.

You aren't the only one though. Between this and the 300 forum, plenty of people have complained about tail heaviness and have either added weight or moved things around quite a bit to get it where it should be.

Nice pic. Makes me want to move to Canada (looks like BC - oh, I see your location now). What elevation are you at?

Wow, I want to move there. I could put floats on my cub. I could crash in the river (anyone done that before?). I could tail drag the water. The options are endless. Not to mention your elevation rocks for the scenery you see.

Ok so this forum is about the 260. My axle broke today and what I would consider not that bad of a landing - it is a grass runway but c'mon... Will be upgrading the axle, gear, etc.
