Great colour scheme Mark, when do you expect to get the plane up in the air?

Thanks Dixie and Andrew.
It probably won't get maidened until mid April. I haven't been flying that long so my one instructor will maiden it for me. Our flying field is probably 1/4 mile back from the road in a field beside a private airstrip. I don't forsee being able to get back to the strip until all the snow melts and it dries up a bit.
I could always get him to maiden it right out of my back yard..................... when it warms up

Anybody have updates? I have not touched the plane in 2 weeks as I came down with the flu. I hope to install the tail feathers and ailerons to finish up the build this weekend.

Hi Acs_Guitars

Routed the thrott;e cable today and added the Du Bro 4/- throttle linkage. Works great, thanks for the tip. Also added the ailerons to the wing. I followed RCKen's advice from his Lt-40 build and glued the ailerons in prior to covering, I have not done it this way before and want to see how it goes - I will also therefore epoxy the empanage together before covering...

Any thoughts on this methodology?

Dave - you have been quiet for a couple of weeks to. Did you catch the flu from replying to Acs_guitars posts? Seriously how goes the build?

On all my kits, I Epoxy the empanage before covering, but I never attach the ailerons. I fillet out the corners of the tail, then cover like normal. I like that method because I feel that fuel cannot get into the corners like that.

If you attach the ailerons, are you going to cover through the hinge then? Dad would just let monokote be the hinge on planes like dirty birdi's and Kaos'. I never thought it was worth it. especially with how easy the CA hinges are.

No I have installed CA hinges as normal. When covering you first place a strip over the hinge area and seal that into the hinge groove, effectively covering the hinge gap. Then proceed to cover as normal. RCKen did a great photo thread of how to do this on an LT-40 and I thought I would give it a go.

I'm back at work! I was away from the internet since last Wednesday as my wife and I just had our first child, a son!

My wife had a full term but he came a few weeks early. Last week I have been doing nothing but changing diapers, feeding, and trying to get more than 3 hours sleep a night!

Mid last week I managed to sneak into the work room to get a little bit of covering done. So far I have the wing about 80% covered. I have the Royal Blue on the underside / wingtips, with the Cub Yellow on the top side. I am pleased with my results so far but I have a feeling that I won't be finishing the plane anytime soon.

I am promising myself that I will have the project done by the summer time.

I think the best thing for me to do is move the project to the living room. That way, I can watch the little guy while continuing to cover. The next few weeks should be a bit easier as we are figuring out his sleep and feeding schedule.

Hi Dave congratulations on the birth of your son. Yeah it does demand major changes in your routine. My son has just turned 11 months and I didn't get to build (or fly) for about 4 months after he was born. You are lucky you are getting 3 hours sleep a night. I remember the first week after my wife and son came out from hospital and how unprepared we felt. As this is a forum about airplanes and not the nuances about nappy changing I will leave it there, but congratulations again.

PS Rishi (my son) already has a push along airplane, an airplane spoon (to go with the sound effects!) and I am planning an RC plane for his first birthday - of course I will have to look after it for him until he can fly it himself....

After another week of not posting an update (even after asking for everyone else's) here are a few pics. I finished the ailerons this weekend... The ones in the kit were way to soft and badly warped so I made a new set from better balsa. Anyway, I modded more than what seems obvious...

MODS:
Raised, Stretched, and Sheeted turttle deck
Cockpit moved forward 2 or 3 inches
Cockpit area opened up
Raised dash cover
Trimed and reversed canopy (may trim more)
Raised top deck from dash to firewall
Rotated engine 90 degrees
Dropped the engine 1/4"
12 oz Sullivan shelf-style tank (might step down to a 10oz)
Lowered tank shelf for propper tank level relative to the engine
Side-mounted 4 stroke install
Solid, permanent balsa cowl
Wings clipped 1 bay each side
Ailerons enlarged and tapered
Solid rounded wingtips
Dual aileron servos in wig center (to mix flapperons)
Bottom center of wing built up to match fuselage
Doublers added from rear of F-3 to F-4
Sullivan tailwheel
Sullivan #508 and #515 push rods
Reshaped and enlarged tail surfaces
Tapered fillets join the tail
Pilot Woody's head turns with the rudder

... I think thats about it (I may add to the list). Right now I have come in a hair under 4 3/4 lbs loaded and should end up under 5 1/2 lbs after covering and painting (Koverall/Dope/Auto paint). Alot of work to make it look as if this is the way it was supposed to be, but I have ended up with a much more attractive aircraft than the boxy stock 4 Star. I'll post more pics after it is covered of course.

Edit: more mods remembered

Hi Dave

I See you are on line. Here are some essentials for your new addition! How is the sleep situation? Don't use lack of sleep as an excuse to CA your plane to the building board - yes I have done it!

Not managed to do much on th 4* since adding the wing tips. I had a bit of a rough landing last week and popped the firewall out of my H9 Alpha. Definitely not glued in with epoxy. So I added some hardwood tri-stock and epoxied all back in place and recovered. So back onto the four star this week and will post some pics.

I like your planes tail - and Woody is great. How did you manage to make the head turn?

Ha! I love the airplane spoon!!

My nighttime routine is as follows...feed son at 9:30pm, go to bed at 10pm. Get up at 2am to feed, back to bed by 2:30am, get up at 4am, back to bed by 4:30am, get up at 6am-shower, get ready for work, feed at 7am. Drive quickly to work-remove coffee pot and insert head for a direct coffee deposit.

I'm going to move my wing and iron to the living room so I can continue working. It's just a bit too cold to keep my son in the basement and all I'm doing at night is watching tv anyway.

Thanks for the compliament, a lot of design planning went into the asthetics on this one.
As for Woody- I had originally planned to have a mechanical linkage to the rudder servo, but since I decided to make the cockpit floor my servo tray that changed. After pretty much letting go of the added feature idea, I remebered I had a GP 8 gram micro servo, that occasionally skipped gears, sitting in my tool bench drawer. So Woody went under the knife. I trimmed the mounting flanges off the servo case and it fit perfectly between the shoulders, the output shaft fit into the neck, and an extended servo arm goes into the beak. A little hot glue to hold the servo in place and a few stiches to hold the servo arm and close him up! I will mix the rudder with an open channel to have his head turn the right direction. It was free to me since I could not use the injured servo in a plane anyway.

Brilliant Please post a video when you get him all operational.

Some progress last night:

I battled to get the throttle cable installed nicely but after a bit of
