How did you route your throttle cable and what method of attachment did you use? I had originally used a dubro 4/- throttle linkage but took it off as it was preventing a good fit of the bottem portion of the cowl. I have subsequently rotated the engine linkage and tried an EZ connector onto the braided cable - this works but how do you get the engine out as the grub screw for the EZ connector is completly inside the cowl.

I thought of replaceing the EZ connector with a ball joint to enable engine removal, but this is too close to the firewall and the solder connection on the end of the braided cable would have to go through the firewall (somehow).

Any ideas? I am using a 21/4" spinner ring, posible this is too small and I should go up a size to allow a little more clearance around the engine.

Andrew

My throttle only has the engine end coupler installed so that it is removable until final assembly... The cable was left long at the servo end and will not be secured until after covering. The cable slips in thru the spinner ring plate and is guided into the cable sleeve on the firewall. For the linkage at the engine I used the Dubro 4 stroke linkage using ball joints. Full travel clearance inside the cowl took a little planning and dremel work, but was possible. I have a small pair of bent needle-nose pliers that can reach in and pop off the ball joint.

Edit: I added a few pics, hope this helps!
If there is smething you need to see a little better let me know and I can take more pics this evening (when not at work )

Hello!
Here is a way to mount the throttle linkage without making elaborate bends in the linkage.

Possibly I made the mistake of trying to fit the first three nose sheets while the engine was installed. Using the dubro throttle linkage and making a recess in the bottom sheet for the ball joint to move freely will work alot bette than the EZ connector directly on the engine throttle.

Thanks

What size of spinner did you use, it looks bigger than the 2 1/4" that I have installed?

I believe it is a 2 1/2".... I know I tried a 2 1/4" and it looked a little small compared to my concept drawings... Yes, I am that detailed with my planes and do several concept and structural drawings and sketches before I start the build. It definitely helps eliminate problems during construction.

Yeah I agree. I did several concepts before starting my cowl too, however I thought the smaller spinner would allow the bottom to "sweep" up to the prop and maintain the lines to the spinner tip. Kinda Spitfire like!

On reflection it does appear that with this engine the extra 1/8 " may make a practical difference. I have a 2 1/2" spinner if I can't get the throttle linkage to run satisfactorily then I wll try that.

When do you start covering?

It is not in the drawing but my engine is also about 3/16 to 1/4" lower on the firewall. I tried to keep it from having a chin-type cowl. I am about to order the dope from Aircraft Spruce and will start later this month. Right not I am working on the cockpit interior and the final color scheme design.

Here's a quick video of pilot Woddy's head turning... sorry for the poor quality, this was done using my cell phone.

Woodys pretty cool. I think I'll try that.

A note about my 4 star - I like your mods, I do that stuff all the time (draw and sketch and plan) but on my 4 star - I built it 14 years ago, no mods, cheap servos and a cheap .40. Flew the absolute crap out of it for 4 years, crashed twice, fixed it then brought it out of retirement and taught 2 kids with it then flew more crap out of it! Finally bit the dust when I drove it into a tree. That was one tough plane and a ball to fly. I'll probably build another one some day.

Have fun.

That is so cool. All you need now is a MP3 of Woody laughing as you take off.

Some progress over the weeked. Did the rough shaping of the balsa cowl, even though I haven't quite worked out the throttle set-up. If I were to do this again (and it is so easy I am sure that I will) I would use a 2 1/2" spinner instead of the 2 1/4" . This allows just a little bit extra space inside the cowl for connection of linkages etc.

The first is of the shavings taken off with a razor plane, the last photo is the shaped cowl ready for sanding.

Looking good! Seems like everyone else is at a stand still for the time being... I am working on the cockpit interior while I wait for covering supplies. I'll post pics once I have the control panel drawn-up and in place. Since Woody is the pilot I am cartooning the interior a bit and may do the same with the color scheme.

Hi Acs_Guitars

When refering back to previous photos of your cowl you have managed to get the mixture adjustment knob through a hole in the top of the cowl, I intended to do this to but only managed to get the engine in through a slot in the side. I also notice that your needle adjustment stands proud of the top of the cowl without the need for an extension and that with you having dropped the thrust line 1/4". I have kept my thrust line as per plans but the needle adjustment screw on mine seems to be lower than yours!

Excuse the rough edges on this side - still to be filled and finished.!!

Look at the pictures closer and you will see that my needle has an extension by way of a socket cap screw head soldered on the end. Also, in the phots the needle is not screwed on more than 2 or 3 threads, when adjusted for running the needle should not stick out at all and be close to flush with the top. I would have to measure, but it may not be droped a full 1/4"... When building I was positioning it to allow hiding the needle and to keep the cowl sleek.

The closer that you can get the thrust line to the center line of the wing, the better it will fly aerobatics. Only problem then is that you have to increase the landing gear length to the ground. Tradeoffs...<G>

I have been thinking of bashing one of these kits into looking like a generic German WWII fighter. The ME-109 would be easy to emulate.
