Thanks Asc_Guitars, I pretty much agree with your sentiments regarding reinforcement and your diagram is spot on. I have added the doubles using the pieces of ply from the cutouts for the lightening holes.

Hi Dave, good to know you are still around and checking up on us, what about a balsa cowl for your plane too?

I was wondering how it was going with the new baby... looks like life happened to you The best thing about the hobby is that you can leave for a while when life requires, but you can always come back.

Well I think the extra effort on the cowl shape has been worth it. As mentioned previously I felt the cowl looked a bit "beaky" as I had used a straight line from the firewall to the spinner on the underside - didn't like it. So I added some 1/16" sheet in staggered layers on the bottom and wrapped partially around the sides and re-shaped the bottom with a compound curve. I am quite happy with the resulting shape. If I can work out something else with the throttle linkage I will be able to close up that area of the cowl a bit more too. The problem here is that if I invert the throttle on the engine and use a ball joint or a clevis then the brass threaded end hits the firewall, this is why I turned it up in the first place and used the 4/- throttle linkage. Any other ideas are welcome.

Looks better and less "beaky" as you say it. Not sure about the throttle linkage issue, since just about any other option will take up just as much room. I think the larger spinner would have been a factor in fixing this. I used the 4 stroke linkage kit with all ball joints and the part of the cowl that covers it is little more than than an 1/8" thick. Hopefully someone else can chime in with a great idea for you.

Sorted out the throttle setup. I pressed out the braided cable sleeve from the firewall and shortened it by 20mm. I then made the penetration through the firewall larger to accept a 25mm section of nylon tube (ex nylon pushrod outer from the kit) that would allow the cable sleeve to slip inside. I glued these two setions together with a 5mm overlap and then glued the new (larger) end to the firewall. I replaced the EZ connector on the engine linkage with a ball joint on a brass threaded end and the extra clearance form the larger tube allows the brass threaded end to slip inside the tube (through the firewall). I will now be able to close in around the back end of the engine and make the engine opening smaller and neater.

Photo''s to follow.

Great to hear!! Keep up the progress... I''m still in a holding pattern with the 4 Star waiting on the dope. I also just aquired a GP 1/3 Christen Eagle II ARF and also need to get to restoring my Zirolli 101" WS AT6 (changing to BT-14) that had the gear ripped out from a touch and go gone wrong .

Some nice models waiting in the wings. Progress may be slow for a while as I am off to Texas for a few weeks to visit relatives. First trip to Texas and only my second to the US. I hope to be able to finish all the building before I leave and to just have to cover upon returning. All being well I should be able to get the plane up in the air in June.

Also have a 1/4 Tiger Moth which I have been "kitting out" which is now ready for building and a 1/6 Piper cub to finish the covering on. So what''s next?

I have a stack of kits in the closet, and I keep finding more that I want. Seems every week someone offers me a great deal on one, lots of vintage stuff too... No one seems to want to build anymore.

- I found out my dope is finally on the way, I hope to get it this week but more than liekly it won't come until Monday. I guess I need to decide on the color scheme pretty quick. I'll post up some of my ideas in the next few days and maybe some of you guys can help.

Where is everyone??

I got my dope yesterday... all 9 gallons including thinner! I will start in with the nitrate this weekend as long as the weather permits. I hope to show some progress pics soon.

Still here, currently been busy organising everything for going to the US next week. All I have managed to do is to sand the leading edges of the horizontal and vertical fins.

My idea about using a larger section of tubing through the firewall to allow the threaded coupling end to pass through did not work out. The very slight offset due to the engine mount caused the end of the coupling to catch on the tube end. So I have reverted to an EZ coupling on the engine end. I will just have to ensure that it is secure before each flight.

Ready now to start the final sand and assembly. Current mods (to date) are:

Du Bro landing gear
Balsa Cowl
Dual aileron servos
Reinforced landing gear block
Reinforced wing bay
Fully sheeted leading edge
Sullivan Golg'n' Rods instead of nylon pushrods
Solid balsa wingtips
Wheel pants
Sheeted turtledeck
DuBro Tail wheel
10oz fuel tank lowered 3/4"

I opted not to clip the iwngs at this stage, I kinda like "floater" airplanes. If I decide to change I will just build a second wing assembly.

Have you sorted out your colour scheme yet?

Andrew

Hi,

I too am at the point of final sanding and assembly and have a question about the wheel pants. Did you buy yours or make them from balsa? as i have made mine. They require further shaping as you can see from the pictures.

If you built yours can you post some pics so i can see if i`m going in the right direction as i could not find anybody else making them from balsa just glass fibre.

Thanks.

Nice looking wheel pants! You seem to be on the right track with them. Now you just need to make some balsa dust and shape them.

I am still trying to decide if I will make wheel pants or not. I fly mostly off of a paved runway, but occasionally I fly from grass. I would hate to put all the work into them just to get torn up on a patchy grass strip.
