Hey Guys,

I just bought a Jett SS40 for an upcoming project. I need a little help finding two things. First, I need a glow plug clip that will fit a Nelson plug. Second, I need a source for the APC 8.75x8W prop.

Any input would be appreciated,

Chris

I've been using this one since I can't locate anymore like the ones sold at H&M Racing (out of stock for quite some time).

As to the prop, just go to the APC website and get them through there. Not sure the racing guys stock the smaller props like that one.

Chris,

Drop me a call tonight. I will have to look around the garge to see if I have any of my nelson stuff around. I always used Mcdaniels igniters when I was racing, but I think Ihave a coupe clips laying around...I will have to look.

Also, if you have trouble finding the prop you need...I will see what I can do. I will be placing a prop order with APC in the next couple weeks.

Kevin,

Will do.

I had a bunch of the McDaniels over the years. The McDaniels didn't hold up to high nitro and they wouldn't stay seated after a season or so. I bought a Radio South Pro Driver about 8 years ago and have never regretted it. I'm still using the original glow plug connector on it.

The orange radio south unit is great, and will work perfectly with that clip. I'm not as big a fan of the smaller yellow one, the battery is smaller and it needs to be charged more often. I really like the blue one from RCATS, has been rock solid for me for a couple years and goes most of a season without a charge. Only because I'm paranoid, I charge it before going out of town for a race, but never for local races.

Yeah, It's the big orange one. I finally had to put a new battery in it. I got a 2000mA Sanyo from Tower and soldered it in. It should be good to go for another 7-8 years.

You can always use Aligator Clips too. You don't have to have a clip type device. The clip type connectors are bending the stem of the glo-plugs anyways. The aligator clips provide a tension free connection. Also was mentioned that the McDaniels won't stay "seated" after a season or so... As far as I know the McDaniels doesn't seat on the Nelson style plug at all. Don't you just hold in on with your hands until the engines fires up?

On the McDaniels, they were the hex type that you could tighten your plug with. Most boat motors have too much compression to start with the plug tight. Problem was that the plastic they use to center the stem connector doesn't stand up to high nitro fuels, so I'd have to take them apart and use a piece of fuel tubing to center that connector. I've never had a Nelson plug on any motor up til now.

Using aligator clips is a great suggestion. If I don't get a clip from Kevin, I'll give it a shot before I buy a purpose made clip.

I use the same Magnum/global clip. Been using them for a number of years.... good product.

I will recommend taking a few minutes to add a bead of solder to the top terminal - where the post is pressed/swaged in. They come loose after a while. Two minutes with a soldering iron and no problem

The orange RS driver is my favorite. I went a number of years without one trying to make my own, and using ni-starters and stuff --- simply indispensable.

I even had one modified to change the timing circuit so it shuts off quicker (in about 30 seconds I think). Don't ask me about the mods --- i sent the unit in for repair, and had it done at that time. I find that the quick-off time helped avoid an accidental short using the big clip. The repair was required when I tossed the driver into my start-box at a race, and the clip shorted across a hemostat. I figured the modification was a good way to "bob-proof" it.

Chris,

Left you a message....found a extra clip.....should get you out of trouble.

Randy,

We used the Orange McDaniels when racing the Q-500/QM-40. Yes you are correct. You have to hold it on and once the engine fired, pull away. The igniter does not lock on. I learned the hard way on my first race having the wires from the igniter and the starter going all directions on the flight line. I thought Rusty was going to kill me after I tripped on it and also go a prop strike in the wires.

The unit that Rcatsystems has it awesome.....we used it allot also. I know Robert Holik had the alligator clips which also worked well. I pretty much boiled down to whose box was on the line and which one we used.

I've got one of those RS orange drivers, and like it. In the last couple of weeks, I've put new batteries in my old Globee "fireplug" units. It's hard to get a lot more simple and reliable than they are. Simple is good, less to go wrong.

Daven, the clip in your post (magnum) looks a lot like the ones I picked up the other day at a swap meet from a guy that sells a lot of control line supplies.

I use the Deans 2-pin Ultra connector on both the orange RS and the globee fireplugs. Put the female connectors on a short wire to the driver, and the male connectors on the glow plug clip, alligator clips, etc. That way you can use whatever clip you like, and even carry a spare in your things in case the "clothespin" clip gives up on you in the middle of a weekend.

By using the female on the battery end, you run less risk of shorting them out when unplugged. You can cut the magnum clip wire in half, put a male on both ends, and have both the clip type and the alligator clips out of one.

I take two drivers to every race, my RCATS unit for the line, and my smaller yellow Radio South in the pits. After I start my motor I take the clip off the motor and clip it onto the handle of one of my plastic screw drivers in my flight box so that it can't short out touching something metal.

Aligator clips would work well for sport use, but I've helped people on the line with them in the past, and have seen them shake loose when trying to start, and when your all amped up on the line it can be time consuming and stressfull to get them hooked back up if they slip off and your on the clock.
