Tigger do you have like a photobucket or somthing where i could maybe go through some of your images and maybe see how the pictures got better when you switched cameras. Also maybe the same for you justa??

Ok and here is another question for you all. My finial project in my class is going to be pick a theme and shoot 5 pics that fall into it. For example Maybe do a patriot of a small town. And shoot 5 things that are unique to it. Or A day in the life of Joe. ANd like show joe at work and eating dinner and mabye playing games or something. Looking for ideas on a good theme if anyone has one. He just told us about it tonight and not really sure what i want to do yet.

All the photos in the following RCX 2006 article linked below were taken with the Nikon D50 and an inexpensive Sigma two-lens kit with macro capabilities.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=710

If you notice the indoor action photos in the article, they are blurred. That is nothing against the camera, it's just that the original lenses I purchased were slower though they are fine when there is plenty of ambient light. One of the cat photos on my website (Tigger with the blue eyes in the grass) was taken with the D50 and the Sigma 70-300. My newer lenses are all F/2.8 or faster--a big price jump.

For example, I still took this photo using the Nikon D50 though I mounted a Nikon 50mm F/1.4 lens on it. However, I did clean it up a little and took numerous shots just to get a few. For the most part, this photo came out better than the shots I took using the Nikon D200 with an F/2.8 lens on it. Lenses make a big difference.

The major differences between the D50 and the D200 are the number of pixels, camera speed, card type, and size of the camera bodies. As mentioned, the D200 also doesn't have pre-set scene modes. More pixels generally mean that a photo can be enlarged more and though I have blown photos up to 20"x30" using my D200 without using any extra software to help enlarge photos, I have seen very nice photos enlarged to the same size that were shot with a D50.

As far as picking a theme, try picking something that you have access to and something that interests you. Then take lots of shots and narrow it down. I simply write that because if you enjoy taking the photos of what you are shooting, you may put more energy and effort into it. Hopefully, then the results will be better and more creative than if you just took photos of something for the heck of it. Myself, I also look up, down, and around at the scenery--sort of like walking the track before racing on it. Sometimes a different angle can help make a photo more interesting. Also think about the lighting and the limitations of your equipment. Indoors or outdoors? Sunrise or sunset? Any events?

That was probably one of the first websites I checked out. Some tend to love him and some can't seem to stand him. For Nikon, here are a couple of websites to bookmark.

Nice shot Tigger, Thanks for sharing some photo taking skills,

Do you use photoshop much after your shots?

I use a little mine depends really.
Astrophotography requires a mass amount of photoshop to get them to look right,

This seems to be the popular zoom lense being offered with the nikon d40 what do these numbers on the end acutally mean?? (i know what the 55-200mm is the measure of the zoom)

AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED

So with a litte research and the help of this pic i seem to get the f4-5 is the largest that one can open but what dose the 5.6g ED mean?? Also know that the larger the app opening the faster the shutter will go to give clear pics with fast moving objects in low light. And thats why your F/2.8 is really good.

And one other thing anyone have anythign bad to say about those ebay deals. I have kinda heard one thign from somewhere saying Nikon only will honor a warranty that was bought from a registarted Nikon dealer.

Astrophotography requires a mass amount of photoshop to get them to look right,

When I first started shooting, I shot jpg. However, now I shoot RAW probably 99% of the time. As a result, I use CS2 with the RAW plug-in. Many times I "tweak" the photo with the RAW plug-in, then crop, and adjust the size image in photoshop. However, if I shot at high-ISOs, i.e. 1000+ though I usually end up at 1600+ with the D200, I end up using the Noise Ninja plug-in to help get rid of the grain--I purchased that program after I ended up shooting sports at ISO 1000+. Sometimes I also use curves, color balance, or the shadows/highlights sliders. Most of the time it just depends on what I am shooting and where I am shooting, i.e. indoors, low-level lighting, etc. Curves to set the whites and blacks; color balance when the indoor lighting varies and plays havouc with some sort of color cast, and the shadows/highlights to tone down some of the highlights.

For those interested, Adobe has some sort of free program going on now...

And one other thing anyone have anythign bad to say about those ebay deals. I have kinda heard one thign from somewhere saying Nikon only will honor a warranty that was bought from a registarted Nikon dealer.

Regarding the aperature of the 4.5-5.6, that basically means that at 55mm, that lens can shoot at an F/4.5 aperature. However, when at 200mm, it can only shoot at F/5.6 and when somewhere between 70mm and 200mm, the lens is shooting somewhere between F/4.5 and F/5.6 at its maximum. If you compare that to the 70-200mm F/2.8 VR, the 70-200mm F/2.8 VR can shoot at F/2.8 whether the focal length is set at 70mm or at 200mm or anywhere in between 70mm and 200mm. In short, there is a large difference between F/2.8 at 200mm and F/5.6 at 200mm--if there is little light, the F/5.6 probably won't even lock focus though it should be fine on a bright day (I've taken golf photos with the D50 and the Sigma lens with such F/stop ratings). Hence, the reason I upgraded lenses as soon as possible and another reason that lens is expensive.

Regarding the Nikon warranty comment, yes I have heard that as well. Also, if you order from some place like B&H, they list "USA" items and "gray" items. It's also my understanding that NikonUSA won't warranty the "gray" items which are usually sold at a slightly lower price than the "USA" items. Personally, I would be very leary from purchasing a camera on ebay since I would rather check it out in person. Locally, if I want to purchase used camera equipment, I can visit a few independent camera stores, the camera clubs, or even the pawn shops. Also, I wouldn't purchase a third-party lens (non-Nikon/Canon) online as well since it is my understanding that the quality control may not be consistant.

wow - I just pieced together a great post for you with a cross section of images from my last 4 cameras - took almost an hour - page refreshed - all gone.....

So I will summarize this time around.

I have over 8gb and 28000 pictures on my picture site. All of my family pics are password protected but my boat and selection of preferred pics are on show. The preferred pics are in no particular camera (or date) order.
If you look at any picture it will show you the camera data at the bottom of each image. the cameras I have used over recent years have been the Fuji 4700, the Fuji 7000, Fuji 9000, and now the Canon. I have taken around 30,000 pictures with each of the fujis (all still work perfect) though looking back would have to say the best pictures I have are probably from the basic and old Fuji 4700.

When I look through some of the images I have taken over recent years I cannot say I see a direct correlation between my best and favorate images and the best camera. I have found the best camera is the one you have with you in many cases. Considering my new canon with the bigger lense is around 8 pounds - you will definately know you have been carrying that with you on a hiking trip. While the chances of it capturing a sharper image are high - the chances of me wanting to carry it all day are not so high.

If you really are making comparisons of camera image quality then looking at a 72dpi monitor screen at compressed folder pictures is not really going to show you all the details. All the pictures I have stored online are compressed (significantly) - otherwise it would be a very slow slide show and even less of my relatives would check out the pictures.

Hey thanks for the effort on your part their. I know what you mean about deleting post after you spent a long time on them. I think i am going to get a D40 its not to to expensive and can take good pics. Thinking about maybe getting one of those VR lenses to help reduce blurryness becuase of camera shake. Also this site seems to have the best prices. http://www.adorama.com/
