Was wondering if transtar acrylic urethane clearcoat would be ok to use (as clear gel) with epoxy layup?

I've used water-based polyurethane as a finish clearcoat over epoxy, stood up to 30% nitro, weathered well, nice finish.

I use urethane clearcoats no problem on Epoxy fuse's. PPG 2021 and 2060 are my favorites.

you guys are talking about the clear coats after molding - right? I think the question was for in the mold.

You can use the transtar in the mold or out.

Thanks for the reply's. I'm more concerned about uv protection on my 84in. offshore cat. as well as compatability with epoxy and release wax.. Any suggestions on when to lay up? After full cure or post (flash or tack). Iv'e used polyester primer in the past with v-ester resin but havent gone the epoxy route untill now. Figure the acrylic urethane is the way to go so my carbon/kevlar doesn't go gold in a year.Any more info would be awsome!

c-cat,

Here is what I do and it works well for me.

The afternoon before I do my layup I wax the molds with Collinite (good stuff) then tape
off the flanges and shoot a couple of coats of urethane primer (use your clear coat), let it
tac off which is less than 10 min. your clear will be longer, you will have to feel it out. Pull
off the tape and leave for the day.

The next morning do my normal layup and your good to go. You should not go over 24 hrs.
to do the layup after shooting the paint.

Chuck
