Hi Cap,

I remember that, glad you were able to get the right parts to allow you to move the engine forward. I knew I was in trouble when I first got the plane and I weighed some of the parts. The rudder weighed over 4 ounces compared to the rudder on my 74" Yak which weighed 2.5 ounces and the Yak has a larger rudder. Thats almost the weight of a servo. The other tail parts were also very heavy in comparison. I think those tail parts are made of rock hard balsa, very sturdy though. I think I will try moving the engine about 3/16" forward (will require another hole in the cowl to clear the low point of the muffler). Then I will just have to add weight to the nose to balance.

Thanks to all who have answered up ............ RJ

Hi Guys
I,ve got a Saito 220 thats just sitting looking for a home and was planning on getting one of these planes.
Due to the tail heavy nature of the reported buildups using light weight gassers I,m a little concerned.
Has anybody used a Saito 220 and if so how was it? Also can thw tail wheel be swapped out for a lighter version to save weight.

thx
Dave

Dave,

The 2.20 will work very well, you will need to keep everything up front but it should balance.

The tailwheel is pretty light but im sure you could find another one out there that will work as well.

Thanks Mark, I,m going to go ahead and order one.
I will also share my buildup here on RCU and include any changes necessary to achieve a good result with such a light weight power plant.
I just weighed my DA50, slimline pitts muffler and a ignition battery, the Saito with muffler is 16oz lighter so it going to be a challenge but will probably
end up being around 1/2 - 3/4 lbs lighter AUW dry weight.
thx
Dave

Hello Dave,I completed mine a couple months ago with a saito FG-36,basicly the same thing with battery and ign. The fuel tank lays on it's side with flight batt. and throttle servo right along side it as far forward as possible. Ign. batt. and ign. box are mounted on each side of the engine. The eng. is mounted on it's own metal motor mount which is then soft mounted to a 1/8" aluminum plate that is the same height and 1" wider than the motor mount. The tru-turn spinner back plate is 1/8" forward of cowl. No additional weight was added and CG is 1/8" behind recommended. Plane flys real good. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for getting back to me.
I,m thinking I,ll need to fabricate a mounting bracket to get the battery out in front of the firewall to help with the CG. I,ve done it before with good success.
I,m also thinking of going with JR 9411 metal gear digital servos for the elevators they will save 1oz in the tail which will help considerably.
I,ll go with 1" servo arms in order to limit the throws slightly so that the elevators don,t over power the servos which are each rated at 90 oz of torque .
I realize they are under the recommended torque specified in the manual foe the elevators but I used these servos in my H9 Extra 260 78" with good success and it was of similar dimensions and weight.
Waynere do you have an accurate weight of your Extra with the Saito in it?

Dave

Hey Dave! Where do you fly out of? I'm just down the road from you in Woodstock. Ever come out to our funfly? It's a good time; it's Sunday July 12 this year. Or come out and visit - bring your plane, our field is in really good shape.

Cheers,

Andrew.

All my previous planes (40-size) have used Barbies but they don't come big enough for this plane. I've seen some helmet heads with a photo that you glue to the horizontal surface that shows the rest of the body and interior but I don't know where to get those. Any leads?

Hi Mark,

Just bought the extra 35cc QB, looks great! Got a ZDZ 40 to go in it, will this be a good engine for vertical performance?

RC_Fanatic,
I think you are talking about "virtual cockpits" by www.wrightrc.com. I don't own one, but I have seen them - they are amazing.

Hi Andrew,
I fly out of the Flying Dutchmen club in Kitchener. I wouldn,t mind coming out to your clubs funfly though we could trade notes on the planes.
I,ll keep it in mind and will be in touch if I can make it.
Apparently the new shipment of AW EXtra 300,s has arrived at the Canadian distributors [HiFlight] so I should be good to go in a week or so.

thx
Dave

First flights on my 35cc Extra 300 Saturday, I was a little worried about being a little tail heavy but everything went very well. No more than one click of trim in any direction and she was flying straight and level. First two flights were five minutes to get the trim set and make sure that nothing was vibrating loose then a fifteen minute flight to have a little fun. Knife edge will require some small mixes but nothing major. I was flying with very small elevator throw because I was worried about the tail heaviness, shouldn't have worried and will have more normal throws next time out. It required 10 ounces of lead on the motor mounts to balance at 3-3/8"
Now I have to figure out how to get rid of some of the lead, I can move the battery up beside the gas tank but can't think of any thing else right now. I'll try to add a picture, sorry about the lack of wheel pants, our grass field eats wheel pants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No bling either, I hate it. To take the beautiful clean lines of an aircraft and chop it all up with a bunch of bling really turns me off (no offense intended, just my opinion).
Good airplane Mark, keep em coming.

Those are great, and expensive!. The ones I'm talking about are just a flat photograph. I've done that with my Barbies as I need to cut them off at the waist to fit in the plane. Then I take a photo of the lower part of the "body", print it to scale and glue it in. Then the top half gets installed to match to the picture. I have some examples but the're on the other computer.

Congrats on your maiden RJ, do you have an AUW for your Extra with the RCGF 45 /JTEC combo?
I,m starting to really question my decision to use my Saito 220 in this airframe.
It weighs 42oz and my Hyde mount is 6oz, I plan on putting my 6oz Rx battery up front mounted abvove the engine so I,ll be at 54oz all up wt. in front of the firewall.
I,m getting the feeling that I,ll be needing 16oz+ in additional weight to balance.
I,ve been rethinking my plans to remove tail weight on an extreme level since its flying season already.
Any info would be appreciated.
thx
Dave

Hi Dave,

My dry weight was 14 Lbs. 9 Ozs. I have already removed 1.5 Ozs. from the nose for the next flight. I have a feeling the thing will fly great balanced at 3.5 Inches. Go ahead and use the Saito, just hang enough lead on the nose to balance it at 3 to 3.5 inches, fly it, then remove weight till it flys the way you like it..........RJ

Thanks RJ. I,ll get on the RCGF site and check out the weight of your engine, to give myself a ballpark for what I,ve got in store.
I,m waiting for the Canadian distributor to release the latest batch of 35cc Extra and am starting to a little jumpy.

Hi Dave.

Your Saito 220 should be a beastly combo.
The RCGF 45 with ignition and stock dump is 54.7oz, so your 220 at 40.5oz is a bit light, but ultimately after a few flights you're gonna probably push the CG back anyway.

Consider mounting the engine at 6 1/4" from the firewall instead of 6" and mounting your battery on the engine box.

I balance my 35cc 260 about 1/2" behind spec - not twitchy and helps tremendously with tumbling, harriers and flatspins.

Cheers,

Andrew.
