Hello, I have an Ofna starter box with what I believe to be a 750 motor. My question is how many A123 cells would be a good pack to run my starter? I was thinking of building a 4s1p MEC solderless power tube and dropping it in there. I have some cells left over from other packs I built and I think these would drive my starter well. Any thoughts or has anyone done it already? On 12v the starter turns over my .28 well so I was hoping the A123 would work good or better.

I use 4s1p of the VPX cells to power my starter and it works great on my Saito 91. All I did was solder a jumper between the tw0 2-packs and then a lead from each end to a deans, wrap the whiole thing with tape , then tape it to the starter.

The VPX are 1100 mah and they easily give me 6 starts and are still 3/4 full when I recharge them. Of course, the Saito is very easy to start, but the VPX A123s should work well for any starter application.

Good luck

That's a good idea! I'll have to pass that along to my airplane buddy. The cells robust discharge rating leads me to believe they would crank over my .28 with some authority. I would have around $60 in the battery though and that might steer me to a gell cell. I may give it a whirl, I've got some time to think about it as the weather is a bit cold right now anyways.

You can get the A123 Black & Decker VPX cells (2s) at home Depot for $19.95. I found them on sale for $17.88 a couple of weks ago.
