The first photo is the nacelle on engine #1 after a couple of minutes sanding.

The second photo shows the wing in its current state.

5 nacelles down, one to go.

I didn't get much further so there isn't much to report.

I added balsa filler to engine nacelle #1 (in photo) and started placing the nacelle formers for engine #6.

Soon I should have something other than nacelle photos to post.

I made a bit of progress...

The first photo is after sanding the balsa filler on engine #1

The next photo is a reminder to add some additional support to the motor mount

The third photo shows where I am at right now with the final nacelle top on engine #6.

I should be able to finish the last nacelle later today, take a wing photo, and weigh in. The weigh in will be interesting.

I am sorry that some of the photos are a bit blurry. My camera phone doesn't do too well on close ups and sometimes I forget to keep the camera further away.

Here we go.... the last nacelle. If it's seemed repetitive, it was. Six engines will do that.

The first photo is engine #6 planked.

The second photo is after sanding and adding a layer of balsa filler. I will suffer you with another photo later when I sand the balsa filler.

The third photo is the wing as it is now. The props should have been put the props on because it looks better. I will do that in the next wing photo. I will have to get the fuse down and put the wing on it to see how it looks with engines.

I will need to do some housecleaning so that I can put the scale under wing. I will get an update on the weight soon.

I decided to weigh in before cleaning up. I reviewed my previous weigh in and I had neglected to say that the previous weigh in of 5 pounds 14.5 ounces also included six props and prop hubs. I took a quick look through the previous posts in this thread to see what the weight of the fuse is. I thought that I had posted it but when I looked back I didn't see it. I will have to get the fuse down and weigh it too.

The current wing weight with props and ESCs is 6 pounds 1.5 ounces. That means that the top half of six nacelles added 3 ounces to the plane.

Here is one more wing photo with the props on.

I don't know where the photo went. I will try that again.

I put the wing on the fuse and placed all that on the scale.

The full weight (fuse, wing, retracts, 6 motors, 6 ESCs, 6 props w/ hubs) comes in at 9 pounds 3 ounces.

Rough estimating....

total battery 1.5 pounds
radio gear 1 pound
covering 1.5 pounds

Puts me at 13 pounds.

I think that will be ok... any thoughts?

A little heavier than mine but still VERY light for a 9 foot wingspan 6 engine scale model.

I think it will be fine. - John.

Hmmm, I will have to give some thought about where I might trim a bit of weight.

Our wings are almost identical. What did you figure for wing area and wing loading on your B-36?

Perhaps my estimated weights are a bit off, or, perhaps my retracts weigh more.

There are a few of areas where I used solid (very light) balsa, but I wouldn't think that I would gain much with lightening holes.

I am working on flaps right now. I should have some photos soon.

Looking good Mike! I couldn't help think looking at the wing by itself of the old flying wing. I think you will do just fine at 13 lbs. I don't think you are planning too many 3D manuvers.

Mike,

True, no 3D maneuvers with this one. Boomerang1 confirmed that his flies similar to a sailplane.

I think I can take a few ounces out but I doubt that I can shave a full pound off the current plane.

I am hoping that my estimates ( 1 pound radio gear, 1.5 pounds battery, 1.5 pounds covering ) are high estimates. Even so, I still have flaps, ailerons, elevator, bomb doors, engine nacelle bottoms to add.

I think I will be satisfied at 13 pounds.

I ran in to someone at the hobby shop yesterday that offered to talk me through a glassing process using a MinWax product that is lighter, not quite as strong, and not fuel proof when compared to using epoxy. I'm not too worried about strength because the wing spars go far in to my wing. I might try this out on my A-26 wing to see how it works for me.

I've decided to stray from the plans once again. When I did the CAD work for this plane I didn't know that the aileron and flaps should come all the way to the edge of the nacelles. From the photo you can see that I have sanded away the balsa so that the flaps and aileron will be correct.

That's about all the progress there will be tonight.

Hey Mike what minwax product was the other guy talking about? I'm curious.
