Petronio,

Great photo! It shows a nice side view of the canopy and nose section. I still need to modify the nose of my B-36. Every photo helps. Originally my plane was going to be a XB36 which has a different canopy. Everyone likes to look at photos so I will add a couple showing the differences.

I hadn't seen this photo before. I seem to recall seeing some documentation a while back that covered the small plane in the foreground. When I come across it again I will post it here.

Thanks again for the contibution to the documentation.

Did you say in your email that you are building a B-36? If so, join in this thread if you like. We would like to hear about it and see some photos.

Indeed, the nose is slightly different. No, sorry I'm building the one in the foreground, not the B-36. Good luck and keep us posted )

It's the B-36's baby! It's the McDonnel XF-85, a parasite fighter designed to be carried in the bomb bay of a B-36 & used to defend the B-36 from attack from other fighters. It was a failure & ironically never flew in a B-36, only under test from a B-29. It was called project FICON.

What did enter service was the carrying of 'full size' F-84 Thunderstreak fighters semi recessed in the belly of the B-36.

Project TOM TOM was the towing of two F-84's by a wing tip coupling system. The fighters took of seperately, coupled up for a tow to the target area, seperated for combat & then coupled up for a tow back home. Severe turbulence from the larger plane's wing tip vorticies put a stop to that idea. Unlike the belly hook up the pilots of the fighters were stuck in their tiny cockpits for a 10 hour mission.

Other projects were the XC-99, a double deck cargo version which could carry 400 troops. One was built & logged up over 7000 hours as a transport for the air force. The XB-60 was an eight engined swept wing jet powered version (2 built, one flew) & the NB-36 was an experimental aircraft with a nuclear reactor on board. Google the pics. - John.

You got the answer already. Just wanted to repoint something slightly indeed it didn't go beyond a prototype but the plane actually flew remarkably well, the real problem was what I quoted from you. It was very hard to re-attach even for the most experienced pilot so let alone unexperienced pilots. Interesting project anyway. Regardsss

With the plane out of the workshop I have taken a couple of evenings to clean up. Tonight I will start updating the CAD files which should take an evening or two.

I did take a few minutes to weigh the plane last night. The last time I weighed in I was at 5 pounds 8 ounces with the main gear retracts installed. Since then I have had the main gear struts lengthened and I have installed the nose gear with a steering servo mounted to it. I now weigh in at 6 pounds 11 ounces.

Rough assumptions:

1 pound for paint & covering
2 pounds for batteries
1 pound for motors
.5 pound for radio gear
.5 pound for ailerons, flaps, elevator

About 12 pounds flying weight?

It JR has what you need then go full speed ahead! I can understand why you want to protect it with the amount of time you have spent on this airplane. JR is a good brand so you know it will be reliable. No one ever said this hobby was cheap but at least its electric and not jet powered! I don't think I could aford a turbine let alone the airplane. I will continue to watch this thread closely. I have had some bad luck internet access wise with flooding at my day job. (Its the plumbing not the weather) This is the first chance I have had all week to look. I think I'm getting as excited as you are!

Mike

Absolutely stunning!!!!

If you have some specs to share, I am sure that everyone would like to see them.

Is this one electric or fuel? It looks larger than mine.

It was interesting for me to see the how the wing saddle on James' B-36 is similar to mine.

Today is documentation day. My goal today is to finish up editing the CAD files.

Well, I suppose that I should get to work.

It is 1/12th scale. Wing span 234" length is 162". Has 6 Quadra 50's ( I think) Gas.

Wow.... that is twice the wing span of my 114" span B-36 which is 1/24.2 scale.

I thought that I had some nice landing gear. From what I can see, this B-36 takes it to an entirely new level.

I am still shooting for 12 pounds flying weight on mine. It would be interesting to see what this larger B-36 will weigh in at with six Quadra 50's.

I guess there is always a bigger fish in the sea. Even so, I will continue on with mine and try not to be too discouraged.

I have been working on the CAD files today. I have not finished the updates yet. I need to get these done rather soon. Another flyer has offered to convert my CAD files to DXF format so that flyers with CAD software can use them. I don't want to take so long that his offer is withdrawn. The DXF CAD files will be available for free downloading.

Yep..... that is one incredible plane. Feel free to add more photos when you get them.

Your last set of B-36 photos are even more impressive! Every aspect of that B-36 is done on such a huge scale. If you ever run across the weight, wing area, wing loading, and predicted cruising and stall speed... please post the info.

I had no idea that Quadra 50's were so large. There is so much plywood in this plane! As I look at the photos I can't help but think that there are some very detailed CAD drawings out there. I continued to work on my documentation and I almost finished them last night. I probably have a couple more hours to go. Then I will get back to building.

Each set of B-36 photos posted in this thread are more impressive than the previous set. Now let's see someone top the ones you just posted.

Thank you very much for sharing your photos. Let us know if you get the specs.
