Hey ive got a (older than me) super sport with a foam wing. Aquired the kit from gramps and just now putting it together. I am going to test out the foam wing, but is there anyway to bulid a different wing for this plane? I was thinking of doing so just to gain the aileron control(the foam wing doesnt have them). The kit calls for a .15, but I am interested in designing a new wing to fit the fuse, and a little bit bigger motor.

I dont want this to be a hot rod by any means, just sumthin to putt around, kinda like grandpa.

Can a new wing build be done?

And the question.... how, and where to start?

Thanx ahead of time fellas!!!!

pretty involved Q for this thread, or any thread.

Yes, is one answer. Have U built a built-up wing before? It can be done from scratch IF you have but is a long process.

If you have not, then another answer is that you probably should not make one from scratch just yet.

Either way, this subject is outside the norm for this forum...

PM me and/or shop around the scratch forum for more info.

Good luck, enjoy.

Why do you say the wing is hopeless ?

Maybe you could just adapt a standard replacement wing from another plane ? Could you post a picture or tell us what the plane make & model is ?

never said the foam wing was hopeless... I am for sure going to test fly the plane with the foamy......just want to upgrade the plane latter on...

The idea of a replacement wing was what i was originally thinking, just not sure how it would work with the fuse, aerodynamically speaking.

would that work?

I have scratch built a couple of wings using the software program Compufoil. I highly recommend it. It will print out the plans for you including the rib patterns.

If it looks right. It is right.

That size wing looks fine. Go for it.
Do the first NO POWER tosses in DEEP field grass. When it glides with a nice shallow, stabile glide, do a low power test.

You can not go wrong. IN DEEP grass.

The correct term for what you are doing is called,......kit bashing. Nasty name. Great fun. Enjoy it.

It's not so much the aerodynamics you need for this since you will be making the wing pretty much the same size so there's no changes you need to worry about aerodynamically buy just changing the airfoil and adding ailerons. Not a big deal. So I've moved it to where most of the discussion will be placed and that's the scratch building forum.

Now agian though, the question is how much building have you done? Not that it should stop you from doing this new wing but just so we know how to phrase the answers.

And contrary to what the others may suggest this model is large enough that you won't be able to throw it fast enough to test glide it. Your first flights will need to be powered. If you don't have the flying experience yet then you'll need to enlist the help of a test pilot of known ability. Your grandfather perhaps since you got the model from him?

See how the model is with a 15 first. You may or may not want to add a larger engine to go with the new wing.

Also what is the span and wing area of this model? And what is the kit maker and kit name?

To fairly accurately copy the original wing without chopping it up, you can take a tracing off the wing saddles to get the bottom of the airfoil. The top of the airfoil can be copied with a home made profile gauge, or you could even do a quick casting of the wing root area with Bondo.

A profile gauge is several lengths of music wire shoved through tightly fit holes in a block of wood. The closer you can group the wires, the better. Then all you do is adjust the position of all the wires to match the contour of the airfoil. This tool is mainly used for checking the accuracy of mirror imaged contours in body panels.

Good info guys thanx! Im going to build it as is to start, test the wing and see what the flight characteristics are. Then I think I may build up a wing. And as far as the hand tossing goes, I think that it would be best to go with power first. It does have some weight to it. And plus im up in the mountains, so the air is a bit thinner, r.c. dont glide well up here. I tried that with the last one and it didn't go as planned.

but thanx for the opinions, If it can be done, then I will probably get bored one day and do it!

thanx
steve

i love that plane both with and without ailerons, adding ailerons to this foam wing is very easy and will make a great upgrade. anthony@customcraftedrc
