I have been looking at a 50cc (80" AC at Tower Hobbies. They recommend a Fuji 43cc gas engine for it. The weight listed for the Fuji is 5.3lb unfueled.
I have a Hacker 60M with MM that weighs 24 oz. 16 A123 cells (8s2p) @ 2.5 oz /cell is 40 oz for a total of 64 oz or 4lbs. No fuel required. The weight of the AC is listed as 15lb with the Fuji.
The Hacker will pull 80 amps on 24V with a 20x8 prop producing 17lb of thrust for take off. Cutting back to 40 amps for flight would give 7lb of thrust and a flight time of 6 minutes.
I ordered a similar Extra from Nitro Models. $100 less.
The A123 cells cost me $145. Lipos would cost nearly $500 and are limited to about 50 cycles.
A123 cells make electric power practical as far as I am concerned.
