I just received this race report from Lyman Slack of the North Central Florida Club 40 group.

Tom Craig and his crew were all well-briefed and ready for the first Club 40 Pylon Race of 2008. A near-record turnout of 31 pilots were ready to race in perfect weather at the Lady Lake flying site. Veteran racer Bob Holbrook stood down to fill the slot of Chief Starter, and a fine job he did!

The Orange Shirt Barnstormers arrived en masse as did the Yellow Shirt Racers and the ‘Gator Racers. Once again, the YSR demonstrated one-upmanship by not only bringing their cheerleading squad, but by all having bright yellow embroidered towels covering and identifying their models while in the pits between heats. One of their towels was given to a race official, and marked accordingly (Thanks, Shelley!); some question if that might be considered a form of bribery?

Three rounds were flown with eight heats each. There were no mid-airs this time, but the pylons took their toll – score: Pylons 3 ~ Racers 0. The absolute best race most of us had ever witnessed took place in round three. Neil Cassese, Ted Barker, Ron Donnelly, and Herb Chutter all flew an outstanding race!

The matrix had one interesting quirk in that it realized the YSR are hard to beat, so ‘it’ set up one heat between four of them – “If you can’t beat them, make them beat themselves!”

There was a fly off between Neil Cassese and Gerry Dittmar to determine the fourth slot in the Gold; Neil elected to nail the mid-course pylon and did not advance. The Gold was won by Rich Ernst, followed by Chris Wieland and Chuck Roedel. Congratulations to all!

As to the engines – Super Tigres ruled the day, powering all four of the Gold racers. However, the stats are slightly misleading due to the simple fact that there were 22 Tigres v. only 9 OS LA engines entered.

Race two of the 2008 season will be March 1st at the Ocala Flying Model Club’s site. All racers are asked to arrive and register early as there will be a regular OFMC meeting at 10AM. If everyone registers before the meeting, the matrix will be ready to start racing immediately following the meeting. There will be no flying or engine running during the meeting. Because many of the racers will be up in Perry, a low turnout is anticipated, so we’ll still be finished by the usual time. Food will be available on site.

End of Lyman's report

I didn't go to this race, but I intend to race a couple times with them through the coming year.
