thanks, it was a easy mod once the servo bays were cut out,I had to strenthen the sheeting in the tail area where the wheel sits with light ply,its pretty thin.
the wheel set up came from my Top Flight P-47 kit that I didn't need.
funny thing is the tail sits lower than with the provided set up, and once the tail is sitting on the ground there is none of the nose over tendency, stearing is positive as well.

Hitec.I hope you have some flying time with low wing birds???War birds don't fly like 3D planes or trainers.Don't jump in too deep.
I have the H9 P47 gs and it flies great[moki 180] .I have two world models P51d's that fly great. One has a OS 61 and the other has an Os 46 and they both fly great.Remember that the 4 strokes will have the muffler hanging out.2 strks can use a pitts style and can hardly be seen.Tom

4-stokes do not have to have the muffler hanging out and there are pitts style mufflers available for 4-strokes as well....slimeline makes a number of sizes for different motors. I ahve a pitts style on my saito .91. All of my glow planes use 4-strokes and not one of them has the muffler hanging out....some using an adapter, some not. Routing the exhaust can be done without seeing but a tip of a muffler or pipe(or can be completely hidden).

I can't think of an easier to fly, better looking warbird than a H9 Hellcat. With a Saito 100, it is a great introduction to warbirds.

While i can think of a few better looking planes for MY tastes, the Hellcat is a nice plane. In fact, i just finished building one with a saito 125.
For me at least, the Corsair is the best looking US WWII fighter. The H9 hellcat is easy to fly from what I understand. Many Corsairs are not as forgiving, but the Hangar 9 Corsair is a real easy one to fly, just like most of the H9 warbirds. Basically, you cant go wrong with a H9 for someone's first warbird.

Adding my two cents here. I assemble ARF's for my LHS' customers and the Hanger 9 warbirds are awesome flyers when using the recommended engine sizes. The discontinued A6 Texan is a perfect first time warbird. I assembled one with a OS91 FS for my brother who just soloed off a simulator and he is flying it like a champ. It's take off and landings are rock solid. I now have a new preferred "warbird" size and manufacturer. I just assembled for myself a Kyosho Spitfire 40 w/retracts. The quality of the kit rivals or betters the Hanger 9's and the construction in the firewall area is more secure. Now I know most people think the bigger the better when it comes to flying, but this Spit flies like a standard low wing sport plane. I put an old rebuilt OS 48 in it with a 12-4 prop and the flight charcteristics are awesome. This plane you can leave assembled in you car and still have the look and all the features of a warbird like the retracts. The kit goes around $165.00 online from Kyosho and then the $140.00 Magnum 52 four stroke. You can use a Hitec retract as the stock mechanicals of very good quality operate with little effort and only require 3/4" throw. A JR flight pack with S47 servos (4), battery, switch, and reciever is $99.00. You will need an additional S47 for $16.00. The Hitec retract servo is $29.00. This puts the total for all at $449.00. This is quite affordable for any ARF never mind a war bird with retracts and substancially cheaper than a Hanger 9. My LHS is a Kyosho dealer and will be having me assemble these so he can hang up and sell as " plug and plays ". My spit is going to become one of my favorites. If you buy anything off of Ebay like used motors, then the Kyosho SQS War birds are absolutely the way to go for an affordable good flying warbird. I maidened the spit today and will post some pics tomorrow.

The kyosho 40 size planes are nice, but the firewall area is NOT more secure then a H9. I have the Kyosho ME-109 and the Corsair(no longer produced). The firewall area on kyosho planes lack enough glue for proper strength. You must reinforce them with epoxy. I had the complete firewall/motor/ fuel tank simply fall off the front of the ME-109 after only the 2nd flight. Luckily, it happened on the ground.

That being said, the larger 90 size Spitfire is much better built then their 40 size offerings.

My Spit's firewall is all glued in with triangle stock and lots of glue. It came that way. I did epoxy the firewall inside the fuse anyway. What size motor were you using? The lite ply frame work side frames on the Kyosho go all the way to the firewall where it meets and is then glued with the triangle stock on top. The hanger 9 birds do not have any lite ply side frames and the firewall is glued to the balsa sheeting and the stringers with no triangle stock. To reinforce the firewall on the Hanger 9 you need to add triangle stock. My Spit is also a brand new kit and I believe the construction quality has gone way up from the previous earlier generations.

it may be true that Kyosho has uppede the quality on their 40 size planes. As far as H9 planes, I've had 3 of them in the 60 size range and all of them had lite ply side frames. I also have the 150 size P-51 and it also is built solidly. Maybe yours was a manufacturer defect.

As I said in a earlier post, I assemble ARF's for my LHS. He carries a few different brands like H9 and Eflite and I have a decent perspective when comparing models. I have also been building for 30+ years. I have assembled for his customers so far: H9 b25, texan, corsair, miss america p51, funtana 50, and will soon be starting on a 27% extra. Only the funtana has plywood fuse sides (haven't looked at the 27% yet). All the warbirds listed other than the b25 have just balsa and stringers meeting the firewall. The bulkheads and servo tray supports are lite ply but not the fuse sides. I don't think all these planes were defects. Perhaps the ME-109's were a defect. After flying the Kyosho spit with him present and opening the plane up to look inside, he has ordered all the SQS series warbirds to put them in his shop. He is a Kyosho dealer, but until now has only stocked the cars. Don't get me wrong, I own 2 h9 warbirds, corsair and texan which are both excellent flyers with os 91's, but as far as the h9 warbirds go, as far as I have seen, the firewall area on the Kyosho is more secure. The other day a guy was flying a H9 P51 without the cowl because he was still breaking in a new Saito GK100. When he landed he landed a little too fast and lightly nosed over. The whole firewall just neatly broke out all along the fuse sides. No triangle stock, no plywood fuse sides, just balsa sheet and some stringers. He completely covered the back edges of the firewall with epoxy and just put it back in. It is fine now and flies with no issues. Both brands are good but for a 40 size warbird the Kyosho's are a great value. The firewall areas I have seen, spit, kawi, and p40 are more than enough secure for a 52 size four stroke. If people have the need for a 70 on up, then I would think the firewall would need significant reenforcement. The plane as intended is fine. Also, I don't know if you know, but a while back, the Kyosho 90 size spit was pulled because of a unspecified "defect". I might be available again by now.

To revive this thread, I need a new plane for a SuperTigre G-75 2-stroke, after a wee accident with the SIG 4*60 that was its previous home .

I would like warbird - I haven't flown a warbird before - and I have been looking at the Hangar 9 P-47 ARF.

Yes, I know people love 4-strokes but I have the engine and servos and etc etc and if I want to get this approved by my significant other I can't go buying a new engine.

So, do people think the H-9 P-47 will work out with the ST-75?

Get the Sig P51B it's about the same size as the H9 and it has flaps too! It's the best flying warbird I have owned! Looks great too!
