How much better is the Kit ver the RTR. Not into spending arm and a leg for parking lot fun with my son (9). I know the more you spend the better the truck (Motor) and radio. How is the RTR 4.6? But I do like to build.

In the past I've purchased FT team kits cars and later read on a write up that the RTR of the same car was just a little slow but I spend lots more than the RTR. I know second can make the difference of winning and losing.

the kit is awesome, but if your bashing with your son, the rtr is really good too.

if you dont want to spend alot i would get the kit since it already has some of the important upgrades from the start so you save alittle bling and the just get a JR XR2I controller ($99.99).

BTW you can get the kit here for $344.99 www.smfstore.com

The kit has an aluminum tuned pipe (RTR=plastic), steel brake discs (RTR=fiberglass), clear body (RTR=painted), adjustable upper arms AND 1 piece upper arms (RTR=1 piece), dirt bonez tires (RTR=GT2 tires), K4.6 engine with 8.5mm carburetor (RTR=F4.6 engine with 7.5mm carburetor). I'm almost done building my SS 4.6 kit and it's pretty easy, but time consuming.

Agreed. The RTR is a little cheaper in the long run, but if you think you'll be upgrading (and it sounds like you will), getting the SS is the better buy.

The RTR comes with alloy diff cases too. And the steel spur and vented clutch bell are completely pointless, unless u know ur gonna break em. Im still on my first plastic spur gear for 6 gallons and its almost exactly like new. Ive removed the engine at least 15 times. So if u know how to set it right, it wont break! And just like the spur gear, many upgrades on the SS are completely pointless (unless u intend on running a much more powerfull engine). Like the drive train, my cups and dog bones are still exactly like brand new and never had to replace a single one (cup or dogbone). Some ppl actualy think the standard ones are better since they dont snap as easily as the HD ones due to the fact that they bend more easily rather than just break.

And the engine from what ive seen is exactly the same as the F4.6. Ive raced a few savages with the K4.6 and they didnt beat me. And my savage can do a wheelie at ANY point in the first gear (i have the 3 speed installed, with stock gearing).

Painting the body is a hassle, more money, and i dont think itll turn out as good. Unless you know what ur doing and u wanna do it.

The SS wheels may be ligther, but they are smaller in diameter (so i dont like how they look) and the rubber is far less durable than the GT2 ones. I have both.

The firber glass breaks in my opinion are better than the steel ones in every way. For one thing they dont wear out nearly as quick. Im still on my first set (all i had to do is shim them). And stopping power is about the same.

Hmmm... anything else?

I have never tryed the polished pipe, still using the plastic one, but i think that is a really nice upgrade. Probably gonna get one for myself as well.

Oh yeah, and the roto start. You get the roto start with the RTR. So unless ur a fan of pullstarts, the rotostart is a GREAT benefit.

OK, Just bite the bullet and ordered the SS.

Also ordered the 3 speed transmission and reverse module.

I guess I jumped without looking into the 3 speed transmission drop in or the gear set replacement. I just read a thread about 2 speed vs 3 speed gears.
How do I know it's the newer batch of transmission with the taller gear?

Just notice another reverse module including a mixing control. How important is that mixing control since I'm using a 3 channel radio? Are you all using that mixing control to prevent damage to the transmission from switching before full stop or you guy using a switch to control the reverse?

Any other upgrades I need to look into?

Thanks

The reverse module with the mixer is only if you have a 2 channel radio. You will have to purchase an extra servo in order to use reverse (any cheap $10 standard size servo will do).. Congrats on your purchase..
