While getting my very old Not For Sale ready for another season of flying I decided to make some changes to it. I have designed and built a rudder that is mounted to the top for the fuse right behind the engine. A simple mod that should dramaticaly improve knife edge performance.

My question is: When I give it left rudder should both the rear and front rudders go to the left? Or does the front rudder need to go the opposite way? I know if you have a canard the elevator is set up backwards of a normal elevator.

Thanks, for your help!

Regards,

John B.

If the idea is to keep the nose "up" during knife-edge flight, I think you would want the front-rudder to move "opposite" the rear-rudder.
I wonder if you will get some undesired "roll" coupling when that front rudder moves?

opposite for sure. The CG is the pivot point.

I did this to a Sig faser, it did work some, but does create some "weird" handling characteristics. Its not a substitute for a great flying plane, its a bandaid fix for poor KE performace. A well designed plane will KE all day long with little coupling, even slow HA KE. 2 good examples: Fusion & Double Vision. The Double Vision will hold KE without any rudder, it flys on its side like almost like when its upright. The 67" Fusion loves to fly on its fuse, it will not roll out even when in HA KE hover, going slow & full rudder.

I kind of doubt that. Little rudder, sure. No rudder= cartwheel.

Lanier made a plane called the Double Trouble that was designed basically like you are describing. There were two rudders on it. The one on the front was both above and below the fuse though. It looked like you were talking about putting it on the top only. That might make for some interesting characteristics when rudder is applied.

The rudders on the Double trouble act opposite of each other.
