What is the best way to remove the covering from a plane(specifically my Sig Something Extra)? I am wanting to recover it. It is about six years old. I just repaired after a small crash. However, the covering has left a residue, almost like the color part of the film covering is still on parts of the plane. It come off with some scraping, but is there an easier way? Also, what about where fuel has gotten into the wood...is there a way to get the covering to stick there again, or a product that would help with that?
Thanks,
John

If all that's left of the covering is the color/adhesive layer (film layer peeled off), then I would just sand off the residue with 200 grit. If you get most of it off, no harm in covering over any small residue, since the adhesive bond seems to be tight, and the new film adhesive will stick well to the residue.

For the oil-soaked wood, start with paper towel and hot covering iron. Use the heat to suck the oil out of the wood into the paper. Keep moving the paper. When you see no more oil being absorbed into the paper, then swab the wood with denatured alcohol and repeat with the iron and paper towel. A few rounds of this will boil out the last bit of oil and you should be able to cover with no problem.

A product called K2R also works, but not always easy to find. Others have tried cornstarch sprinkled on, which also absorbs the oil.

For best adhesion to the wood, use Balsarite after you've drawn out the oil. Just brush on, let dry, then cover. Others say a light application of wood glue, thinned slightly with water--let dry, then cover. The glue will penetrate the wood, and when heated the wood glue is thermoplastic.

If you do this again in the future, use your hot-air gun to soften the adhesive as you pull on it, and the film will come off easily, leaving no residue. I do this commonly with ARFs where I don't like their covering, and it comes off very clean.

Hi Everyone,

I use a Single Hole Paper Punch and put a Hole into each rib before Covering. That lets the hot air pass from one rib to another, NO MORE PILLOWS Between the ribs as you shrink the covering with a Heat Gun.

Wheels should be DOWN when Landing. kbkopy

Dave, Majortom's method works just fine - in nearly all cases. With slight modifications, I did just exactly what he described about 4 years (or so) ago with my 34-yr old Sr. Falcon and it all worked out just fine.

One thing I did do differently, though, is the oil-soaked part. My whole nose area was severely soaked (it would be after nearly 30 years of flying) and I sanded the wood, then used the alcohol & paper towel treatment, then applied some shellac to help seal in what oil was left. 3M makes a spray glue called "Super 77" - it's fabulous for many things, including using as a contact cement. Before putting on my new monocote around the nose area I sprayed some of the Super77 and let it dry - no ill effects whatever.

Below are pics of the original 1974 red/white/blue covering and the new white/green.

I heat gun or iron works. I heat the area to soften the adhesive then lift it off.
