Toe in would actually enhance a death spin from the only engine running. The advice I've been given in the past is go with toe out. My own experience has shown that with enough rudder command, that's all you need. It's like flying a RC combat plane with several streamers mopped up on one wing tip, knife edge your way out of it.

One problem is that it doesn't look like any more of a Blackbird at 300 feet out than it does at 5 feet....it just looks like a flying wing with a skinny neck sticking out front. I think it actually looks better up close, in the air it looks like a frying pan flying handle first.

HA! I'm crying at work and peoples looking wierd at me...... GOOD NIGHT that was funny.!!!

S72, glad you enjoyed that

Here is more detail. The elevator is joined with 5/32" TIG rod. The cowl is about as light as you would expect 1/2 a drink can to be. The model looks like it will finish tail heavy, so the nose area might get a TT .07 or some other kind of dead weight glued inside for ballast.

Ouch!

What did you use to cut the can... some kind of Dremel accessory?

The side walls of the can cut with regular scissors. The bottom of the can is tough, I pilot drilled a hole, then used tin snips to nibble out a larger hole. To finish the hole I used a 1 inch diameter cone shaped grinding attahment in my die grinder. It will also work in a drill motor, but take more time. The final step is to deburr with a #11 blade.

So you dont have the magic wand for it either then.
Last one I did was a sheet of 150grit on the bench and just ran the can bottom back & forth till it acheived Hole, then tried to "rolled-paper" sand down the razor sharp (guess how I know) inner edge. I was looking for a procedure that involved less bloodloss on my part. That edge was sharp, I mean REALLY sharp... like almost as sharp as the TE of an APC prop

I still say the all time best cowel idea was SR77's contest plane a few years ago. LOL
A Castrol oil can. And that vid was priceless.

Vic, I have to fly that thing again. It was a handfull but looked good in the air. Speaking of the 1/2a contest... I noticed the web site does not work anymore.

Post a pic of it if you have it still!
Dunno about the contest. I never had time to play the game.

It went from being 30-50 degrees every day so far of 2008 to 80 degrees today. That means it's time to get some building done because flying season has officially arrived!
Too bad about the contest site, but stuff like that doesn't just run on "ether fumes" I guess. I would like to see a 1/2A design contest done where the only building materials allowed are household items that have specific uses other than for model aviation. For example, bamboo skewers would be OK, as well as venetian blind slats, take out food containers, etc. I don't think coroplast or depron would qualify to be in the spirit of the contest.
Too bad the old contest never got much of a turn out, only about half of the design proposals ever got finished .

Back by popular demand... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_2777773/mpage_1/key_petrol%2Cpatrol/tm.htm

I spent 10 min looking for picts on my hard drive and then realized I did not have any. My partner in crime Crankypants took all the picts.

CP- I like your contest idea. That would be fun... and since pretty much everything looks like it can fly to me I've got the advantage

Man! It's too bad the vid is gone. That was bar none the best one ever!
Thanks for the pics again, I saved one for my enjoyment.

We all should write to Castrol and ask them to make those bottles lighter.
The Ilyushin is beginning to take final shape.....but I don't like the way the stab/elevator looks. It is too pointed, just like Italian shoes [why do they wear pointed shoes? To kill the cockroaches in the corners.]
The tail is also too heavy. I'm going to build a different one with contest grade sheet and see if it can't be made to look better and be lighter.

Rather than build a new one why not cut out half of those stringers ya got in there and loose some of the wood in the horizontal. You're not carrying payload over Axis territory there.
Get some 24oz cans for cryin out loud, we know you are'nt in denial anymore!

I hate to see that much work go the wayside... all in jest bro.

Vic, those extra stringers will give me a better grip in case I ever want to bop you over the head....
