cactus hopper -> RE: EXI - Pretty Sweet Deal For 99 Bucks (2/20/2008 2:11:47 PM)

I found it at Xheli, Nitro models and Raidentech.

Kaelan -> RE: EXI - Pretty Sweet Deal For 99 Bucks (2/20/2008 2:33:36 PM)

here's the link to it on xheli http://www.xheli.com/exi-450-arf-rc-helicopter.html

I've been wondering about that kit..and if it was really compatible to the trex..and if so... which model of trex... this might just be a good alternative to a trex for those of us on a tighter budget...

cactus hopper -> RE: EXI - Pretty Sweet Deal For 99 Bucks (2/20/2008 2:49:27 PM)

I think some of the Trex parts are compatible across the entire line but this would be an SE clone.

Hmmmmm... no to figure out a way to slide this one past the watchful eye of the accountant (wife)

I shopped around for months looking for a T-Rex type helicopter at a reasonable price. The only thing my local dealer had or could get was a T-Rex 450SA at 270 bucks. I happened to check the Nitro Models web site last week and saw the EXI-HOBBY 450 at $99.00. I ordered it last Friday (plus 400 motor and ESC) at $167.77 (incl shipping).

The nice UPS man brought it by today. The packaging was good. No colorful box. Just says 'HELICOPTER'. Can't fly the box anyway. I noticed right off that some of the usual plastic parts are CNC aluminum. The main frame is identical to the T-Rex and Nitro Models has a large selection of CNC replacement parts at good prices. The blades are plastic I think, but, upgrading to a pair of carbon ones isn't a big deal. After having had a chance to look at a couple of T-Rex's, I think this EXI HOBBY clone is well worth the cost savings. Another $100 bucks for upgrade parts will really add to the bling factor.

The lack of a manual of any sort may be a problem for anyone that hasn't built anything before, but a downloaded manual from Helidirect (as well as watching the videos) should be sufficient.

All in all, I'm pretty satisfied with the purchase. If anyone has some information on setup, please let me know.

for videos on building a trex (or clone) I'd check helifreak for the finless videos...

You're right, I'll look there too. It will be awhile before I get it built. Need to decide on a gyro and a few other odds and ends. Let us know how yours flys (it will fly, right?).

thermalhunter -> RE: EXI - Pretty Sweet Deal For 99 Bucks (2/20/2008 10:11:43 PM)

I also found the SE manual [that should work] on http://www.heliproz.com/manuals.asp.

cactus hopper -> RE: EXI - Pretty Sweet Deal For 99 Bucks (2/21/2008 3:51:55 PM)

Xheli just listed a carbon fiber version of this with a CNC head and tail for $189.00 (copterx SE). Don't have to order from China any more. Now if they'd just get some Esky receivers and crystals in stock.

thermalhunter -> RE: EXI - Pretty Sweet Deal For 99 Bucks (2/21/2008 6:51:31 PM)

Initially, I was considering a CopterX SE but the shipping was a real deterrent. Many of the guys in our club have been buying Motors, Esc's, servos, Li-po's and other small stuff from United Hobbies in Hong Kong with shipping being on par with UPS here in the states. I'm glad to hear that we have another local distributor such as XHeli. United Hobbies is also going to have a US based distributor to go with their US product support system. Its not that most of us can't afford to buy stuff for our hobby at higher prices. We just don't like throwing our [hard earned cash] away. As to my EXI-HOBBY 450, I had the chuckle when I saw the trim sheet enclosed with my kit. The grahics are identical to the T-Rex ones except mine says 'Helicopter 450'. Not very creative, but what the hey[:D].

bigairhonda -> RE: EXI - Pretty Sweet Deal For 99 Bucks (2/21/2008 10:50:27 PM)

I have been real tempted to buy the exi Se version. The one that looks like a Trex except the mount that keeps the swash plate stationary is on the front side. They have another model that has the aluminum top plate too. I think its great that they have these trex clones because its going to keep prices down. Trex no longer has a monopoly on the market anymore. I currently have a BH and love it. I like the exi, hdx, copter x and my BH. The hdx is really nice too, however its more than a copter x (299). Does anyone know how xheli's parts support for the exi is??? I know that its new, but how about just ordering stuff form them in general? Thanks.

cactus hopper -> RE: EXI - Pretty Sweet Deal For 99 Bucks (2/22/2008 2:51:19 AM)

I hope that's the case but I'm afraid that until some of the hobby shop owners start thinking outside the box Align will continue to have a stranglehold on the 450 market. I'm going to have to get one of those Black Hawks, it's about the only 450 I don't have one of.

Kaelan -> RE: EXI - Pretty Sweet Deal For 99 Bucks (2/22/2008 2:55:01 AM)

get the BH... I love mine and Mike at Ka-Planes is great to deal with. he test flies each one before it gets shipped to make sure you dont get a bad heli.

there was another thread here about another trex clone.. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7113382/tm.htm this one looks promising as well.

as far as parts for the EXI.. don't think they have any.. which is why they mention it's 100% part compatible with the trex..

franklinbw36 -> RE: EXI - Pretty Sweet Deal For 99 Bucks (3/6/2008 7:50:31 AM)

I just brought the EXI body and to make it sweeter, I brought that DX6i radio. I just finish installing the servos, motor, ESC and gyro. Later today, I will test everything out. T-rex 450SE was capatible in every aspect.
